hi , new on the site , looking at an 05 powerstroke 6.0 just about to pull the trigger on it, however it seems like alot of you guys are having problems with your trucks, just wondering if there is anything i should be careful of when buying? also what kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with programmers?
how often are you replacing turbo;s ,injectors, etc?
looking to upgrade from my 03 5.4 superduty, but not really sure if its worth the trouble.
Thanks in advance!!;tu

get an OASIS report (itll show the service history & warranty
history performed by ANY ford dealer on the VIN)

i know itll be hard to belive (internet being what it is)...but
ive had NO problems, i had one warranty egr and a tranny recall,
and none of those problem EVER left me stranded.

around town i see 14-15...on the highway @ 72mph i get about 19/20...
at 80 i get around 17/18mpg...better than my 96 5.0l (short bed 2wd xtra cab)...
on the interstate in my 5.0L gasser the best i EVER got was 14mpg and around
town i typically didnt do better than 11/12mpg

If you want true reliability maybe look into the 7.3 superduty. Alot of people here wish they had kept theirs.

i dont think thier are a lot of problems with the 6.0, just stay away from the early years (this runs true for just about any new engine). i think some of the problems are egr related. the 7.3 is not an egr engine, and is very reliable. any make, any model will have its little bugs, some more than others, but i think either the 7.3 or 6.0, or even the new 6.4 are damn good engines. i have heard a few horror stories, but not enough to scare me away.
welcome to the site.

the early 7.3 had its 1st year issues & the 4r100 (in the 7.3)
is the weak link in that set up.

the 6.0 is STRONG and its torq-shift tranny (5r110)
is almost problem free (one early warranty recall was
the only problem).

bottom line is these things are mechanical...and youll
be a happier owner when/if youre educated about
them (it takes time to learn 'em so understand that and
come to the forum for a quicker ramp up & experience).

one thing you can bet on is that they WILL break...and like
any other car (or truck) theyll break more often and when
most inconvenient if not maintained and serviced.

It can be even MORE frustrating (at least for me) if i were
not willing to maintain it myself....if every bit of service is to
be performed by a dealer or some other shop you can expect
to write some unpleasant checks.

this forum has helped me learn about my 6.0L and ive shared
what ive learned and worked on 1st hand...just like those that
have helped me.

like anything...if you start modding the motor w/ tunes and
other things you can expect to decrease the reliablity...its
a give an take.

in my opinion the 2005-2007 trucks had ONE problem (covered
under the 5yr/100k warranty)...that problem is w/ the High Pressure
Oil Pump connector. Knowing that I'd still like to have an 05-07
because of the coil front suspension.

I'd buy a 6.0L AGAIN before I'd buy the lower mpg 6.4L...but part
of that is because im comfortable w/ the 6.0.

i've said this many times but here it is again... i have owned both a 7.3 and now have my 6.0 and yes i loved my 7.3 and miss it but i also love my 6.0 ( just get attached to my trucks i guess) like bush said keep em maintained and use them for what they are meant for( keep the egr cleaned out) i have not had one problem with mine that was more than a 30 min fix in the barn but as i mentioned its not a grocery getter and gets used 4 what its meant 4...i also used fuel additive in everytank to add more lube to the ulsd...as for mileage i have the mods below and get around 17-18 was a hair above 20 before the freakin ulsd ( ultra low sulphur diesel) came out

Our old work truck was a 6 litre. In 116k, it went through 3 headgaskets and 4 turbos. Ran great when it was running. My cousins farmer friend had a f350 6 litre that went through 7 turbos.. He finally went to a aftermarket turbo... These were both early production trucks.. My girlfriends dad had a early production 6 litre and it had tons of problems. He traded it in on a year or two older 6 litre and has not problems with it.. I would just be carefull...

Hey bushpilot I have and 02 7.3 with some mods. Can I ungrade to the 5r110 or am I stuck with the 4r100?
