the cheapest and easiest way to get a limited slip for the rear is to get one from a junkyard, around here I can get the whole rear for under 200.

Given that you are in the north and driving on snow and/or ice you don't want a full locker (ie detroit locker) you will want either a good limited slip (detroit tru-trac) or a slectable locker (ARB, Eaton/Auburn Elocker)

On the front in the conditions you're describing you definitely want selectable as you've indicated and ARB is a good option for selectable in the front, expensive but good.

if you're looking in the junkyard you'll need to know your gear ratio (should be 3.73) you will be getting the factory trac-lock rear which will work adequately for your task at hand.

You'll need the rear out of any 00-04 (you can go back to 99 if you plan on swapping all of the brake parts) F250 or SRW F350

specify that you want a limited slip rear and it'll work for you.

LImited Slip

I have a 2001 powerstroke 7.3 and I was having trouble with the rearend not locking up when one wheel was spinin I took cover off and realized that the clutches in the rear end were worn out and need replaced the rebuild kit is only $100 Its cheaper than replacing the rear end and it may be a good idea to check it out before replacing it

When i broke the spider gear in my 2000, I replaced the warn out limited slip with the Detroit Tru-Trac. I have been very happy with the Detroit unit. It made a very noticable increase in traction. There is also no extra noise from the rear end around turns. Im impressed by the fact that the Detroit Tru-Trac is all gears and no clutches.
