its FEDERAL law...if the truck was manufactured w/ one...it has to have
one on it <or you could get a ticket>...

personally i dont know anyone that even bothers to LOOK under the
truck (since many states dont test diesels for emmissions anyway).

I ran a straight pipe for a couple of years and never had any problems with the law. It also went through 2 emission tests and nothing was said. (visual and a smoke test) I had more problems when I installed my dual exhaust with a muffler than the straight pipe. (aparently it was louder!) I would go with a 4 inch turbo back. I reccomend MBRP.

Does it affect that law at all if some of the 7.3s came without a cat?

The laws here in Canada require it to still have the catalyic converter if it was factory equipped with one. The Police or the Mininstry of Transportation here don't seem to bother the diesel trucks or SUV's but they sure like to harass the hotrods.

they are only federally required where factory equipped. however, that does not mean a particular state cannot require it regardless. You wont get into trouble for lacking one if it didnt come with one though. The label on the passenger side valve covers say if it did.

The first 99's came with the catalytic converter. Then came the 99.5 mid-year revision and the catalytic converters disappeared. Vehicle inspectors that can tell the difference between an early 99 and a 99.5 and which had "cats" and which didn't, are going to be very, very scarce.

When or if catalytic convertors were resumed on 7.3's on the 2000 - 2003 years, I dunno.:dunno

didnt...i understand the same is true about the early (pre '99)
diesels too...very hit and miss.

My 02 7.3 didn't come with a cat but my buddy's 02 (pretty much the same truck) had one on it. Like bushpilot said it's very hit and miss.
