Robert, they're probably just beginning to come around your place. I grew up in North Louisiana in the woods near a creek. We always had lots of snakes, especially the black "chicken" snakes. They sure did love to raid the henhouse and get eggs.

Just killed my first snake of the season in my usual manor...a shovel. Kill first...Identify second! It was between 3' & 4'.

Many years ago, down by the shoreline of Shasta Lake, I saw a diamond back rattler, and found a nice big rock, and accidentally dropped it six or seven times on his head. There was a tree hugger liberal close by and he started giving me a bad time about killing a snake, and I told him that he should be thankful that he did not slither, or I would do the same to him.
A good snake like a good spider is a dead one.

Not trying to hijack this thread. I agree about the snakes - kill first, identify second.

My buddy and I went fishin for cats down on the river and he cought one that was at least 5 ft long and about as big around as a shovel handle....man I hate snakes
