A couple of years ago, I had to do the rear barkes on the beast. The right rear was clearly dragging and making a bit of a mess of the rt rear wheel. I bought rear rotors and pads thinking "piece of cake". Well as it turned out, the slider pins were siezed and I couldn't get them loose for the life of me. Following good mechanical practice, since I had to replace one rear caliper with bracket, I did them both.

In the days since I got back from moving our daughter to Nashville (and my coolant temp gauge adventure), I've been hearing the dreaded metal on metal sound in ever increasing volume. So I go buy front rotors and pads, again thinking "piece of cake". I put the front axle on the jack stands, get the wheels off and then plop my butt on the little padded geezer support with the caster wheels and get to it. (Note word for word cut & paste from previous paragraph): Well as it turned out, the slider pins were siezed and I couldn't get them loose for the life of me.:rant:rant

So here it is 4 pm Sunday afternoon. The only place in town that is open is Advance Auto parts, seller of quality coolant temperature sensors. They have the calipers, but not the brackets. Since the slider pins are siezed in my old brackets, my calipers & brackets are pretty much now a one piece paper weight. So there is no reusing the old brackets, I new new ones.

My advise to everyone: if you ever need to do your brakes, just buy rotors & loaded calipers with brackets and get it over with.:rolleyes:

Fortunately, I have never had a one freeze on me. We don't get the rain and snow (salt) that you do. I am sure that is the cause. Sorry you are having more of the same...

I think Dave is right about the salt that the brakes see. I just did the front brakes on my '04 a few months back and it was like disassembling a brand new (almost) set. If I was in Massachusetts I am positive it would have been the same issue.
I have always given everything a liberal coat of Never Seize to try and prevent those issues. Usually works pretty well.

some kroil, heat, and a big hammer freed up my stuck pins and the caliper comes with new ones so I haven't had to buy the brackets just did the first front brake job on the truck 220,000 miles on front pads and still had material left on them. hand shakers do make a difference.

yeah, these slide setups just suck.
I'm not sure I'd use Never Sieze.. I think it congeals and dries out, then the metallic soaps in it just make it worse..
High-temp silicone grease (made especially for brakes) is what to use..
that's what I used on mine, anyway...

DITTO....i usually service my brakes every spring(all that salt from winter) and fall. seems like a bit of work, but will keep parts clean(with new grease) and from siezing up. also it is a good idea to clean the rust that usually builds up underneath the shim plates and caliper bracket....JMO

As long as I'm the brakes mood, I think I'm going to take your hint and go over the rears tomorrow.

I'm done with the fronts, new rotors, calipers, brackets and pads. I rotated the tires too. As long as the rears are off, I figured not a better time will come along to give them a preventive maintenance.
