I find your findings about what I would expect. I have got a best of 22.4 MPG and that is at 65 mph. I hit the twenties a few times at those speeds, which is the speed I travel for extended highway trips.
I find it funny or sad that everyone is up in arms about fuel prices, but no one wants to SLOW DOWN. That is the very least we can do to affect our consumption. Those that can carpool should also. We do no want to give up our freedom though. Heck I don't either!!! But what are the options?? -popcorn
Yeah, you never any calls for a return to the 55 mph speed limit like we had years ago. Wasn't there a slogan "Stay Alive At 55?" Remember how all the vehicles made in the 80s had the 55 mph marked on the speedometer in red? If everyone would drive 55-60 on the highways, the country would save lots of fuel and maybe get the greedy oil companies to cut their prices. It seems that the higher the prices are, the higher their profits. I wonder what the prices would be if oil wasn't being traded on the commodities markets?

I have wondered why not change back myself. And I wonder why at 2 or 3 am I have to sit at a stoplight idleing and then accellatoring again when I'm all alone. Changing to flashing signals would help too.

I guess that was the point of the thread I started at that other web site......... why do we or how can we complain about the prices at the pumps when we for the most part have a controlling factor on how much fuel we use. I seriously think if you want to put the hurts on an oil company all you need to do is figure out how to reduce your usage by about 25%............... PERMANENTLY!

Yes, the price per gallon has risen exorbitantly in the last six months, and yes I think it is over priced and yes I do work in the oil and gas industry. I dont however have the inside track on pricing or profits.

Wayne hit the nail on the head with his comment on the commodity markets..... the futures traders are really pushing the price per bbl through the roof right now.

Well my fuel consumption has dropped by 50% recently since I began carpooling to work.

I've actually noticed in the hours I go & come from work 7AM & 3:30PM that in the morning the traffic is still running at it's normal 75-80 MPH but in the afternoon traffic has slowed down so that cruising at 65 I'm going right with the flow of traffic. Save for the odd guy who's in a hurry and goes flying by @ 80. Though what baffles me to no end is that even at those speeds which is technically 10 over people still feel obligated to slam on their brakes when they see a cop. Even if he is on the other side of a concrete barrier. :dunno

From the price jump we had last week with the fear of running out of gas I saw prices routinely jumping to 3.50-4.00 with some as high as $5-6.00/gal yet there were still people pumping gas at those stations. So evidently there are people willing to pay those prices.

In my opinion the vast majority of the population is stupid and does not recognize the correlation between speed and fuel economy. The members of most automotive sites have a good background in common sense and a reasonable mechanical knowledge, which allows us to make changes to our driving styles and our vehicles to maximize fuel economy.

Recently I have noticed more poeple driving like raving lunatics, which in part is due to where I live such that the average driver is a lunatic so the raving lunatics don't stand out too much. So it may be that they are becoming more frequent or maybe I'm just paying more attention. I am seeing or noticing more and more people, both men and women, driving a fullsize suv whith only one person in the vehicle driving like it was the indy 500. The perfect example was a nice suburban this weekend in the grocery store parking lot when all throttle or brake applications were all such that I could see the body nose dive @ brake and nose rise and body slightly rotate during accelleration. Realization that the parking lot is only about 150yards long.

Right after I read this thread I headed for Valdez on a fishing trip. Thinking about it I set the cruise on 60 in the 65 zone and 55 in the 55 zone. Every rig on the highway passed me all the way there and back. I did pass a few motorhomes but for the most part people just drive with the hammer down. I believe I paid around $2.60 here for Diesel but in Glennallen it was $3.19 and they still drove with the hammer down. I didn't even look and see how much it was in Valdez but I am sure it would have shocked me. We brought home a large cooler full of salmon filet's but I am sure it would have been cheaper to go to the store and buy them. We only got 11mpg on the round trip because of the mountains, some serious winds and we were towing a 21ft Jetcraft. I would hate to think what kind of lousy mileage we would have got if I had drove like I usually do(hammer down)....

I wish more folks would realize that doing simple things like consolidating trips, slowing down 5-10 mph or car pooling can have a significant impact on fuel usage. Especially when you talk in terms of nation wide..... why do we have to wait for the federal govt to impose the 55 mph speed limit again until we pull off the throttle just a hair? I just dont get it.

Today I had a pickup folllow me out of town and by golly if he didnt stay behind me, and at 60 mph it took me 40 miles to leave him in the dust. :D

Seems like its more than just driving that people are doing faster today, life in general seems to be so much more hustle and bustle than it was a couple of decades ago. Nobody takes time to stop and smell the roses any more. :(

I agree. I didn't even realize I was neck deep in it until I got out of construction and into my ISD job. Now I drive 8 miles round trip with little or no traffic letting the motor get itself up to speed unless somebody wants some :D I feel like an old man now at the age of 31. I don't even leave my town but two or 3 times a month anymore. I forgot what a traffic jamb and a freeway were :thumbs
