HPX Oil Hose Go BOOM!

Ran down to the local hydraulic supply store (Parker) and had them make me a HPX hose. The hose was 5,000 psi, and had the 90 degree crimp on fittings on the end. Installed the hose and after about 30 miles - BOOM - sounded like a gunshot and the truck shut off. Got out and looked and there was oil on the ground. To make a long story short - one of the end fittings blew right off the hose (the part where it's clamped). The guys at the store did the crimping on one of those big machines. Could they have gotten the wrong size die? I can't think of any other reason for it to fail like that, but I would think that they would know how to make up a hose. :dunno
Could something have been plugged?

Worst part was - got towed back to the house by a Dodge

I've seen undercrimped hydraulics hose before. Had one come apart with virtually no pressure.

I've been told a properly crimped hose will blow apart before an end will come off. Thats not a fact that I've verified tho.

Not getting the hose seated all the way in the fitting before crimping will also cause that to happen.

Had a 3/4" line blow at work last month due to that.

on edit: the 1/4" Parker hose we use is 3000# working pressure, 5000# burst.

Wow that sux! Get a couple plugs for the adaptors in the heads and you won't ever be stranded just set back a few minutes.:sweet

As far as the hose I'd go ask for the shops hose assembly certificate. Then ask to see what end they used, have them make sure it's compatible with the hose they used. The length supposedly has alot to do with it, you don't want pulling or pushing on the hose when installing the second end. No "torque twisting" to avoid rubs. If all that is good and they won't stand behind their work find another shop.

What did the hose run ya?-popcorn

hmmm
on your next hose, insist on a pressure check, hoses should burt long before a fitting gives way, I am not a fan of crimps, but done correctly should not let loose. somebody got in a hurry building your line

bet it made one heck of a mess :D

You can see the funny looking stainless steel line in this pic taken of Burdo's truck during a Wicked Wheel install.
