I recently switched to an '06 6.0L after having an '02 7.3 for 4 years. I tow a 10K fifth wheel most of the time. The change was to go to a dually, with plans to be able to tow a bigger trailer later on. Both trucks were 4x4s. I'm so used to the EGTs of the old truck, but the new truck seems to run hotter, whether towing or not. The gauge is aftermarket, the sensor is post turbo. The old truck used to tow up big hills at speed and not go over 1100 egt. The new 6.0 can hit that even when we're not towing.
So, the question is how hot is too hot? When should I back off? I drive a lot in AK and Canada where there are long steep passes, and sure would appreciate guidance on how to approach driving this truck.

Another question is using the Tow/Haul... I'll start a new string for that.

more to how to drive hills question

One other issue... the auxiliary electric cooling fan in the engine in our '06 6.0 comes on much more frequently than in the old truck. Is that just because it truly runs hotter?

do you have teh 410 or 430 rear gears?
and yes teh 6.0 will run up temps a bit quicker but should level out. We have a pretty good 600 foot climb here that realy pushes her
1250 - 1350 egts i hold the trottle to keep her at those temps and it usually down shifts to 4th and sometimes 3rd on this mountian climb
still has tons more umph going up but at a higher rpm to usually she pulls best near 3k rpm

welcome aboard to

oh the fan kicking n... it will come on and cool things off then shut off. it normally doesnt stay on very long. it wil move some air though

edit i must have been fat fingering, change my temps to correct IDEALs for me

It has 4.10 gears (another change in this new truck to get used to!)

Thanks for the input. Are the temps you quote also from a post turbo sensor? I've always been leary to run that hot but if it's safe it sure gives you more range of power to utilize.

Thanks also for the welcome.

Those temps sound pre turbo and not post turbo. You should loose something like 300 degrees going thruogh the turbo.

I ran a probe post turbo (im 3.73 single wheels)...and i RARELY saw more
than 900* (empty/not towing) even when i TRIED !

ive moved the probe to pre turbo and i can hit 1100* getting on the hiway.

ive pulled nearly 10k lbs from virginia to houston & never crossed 1250*

I'm pre-turbo and get about the same results as Bushpilot. I don't ever recall hitting the 1250 mark (been very close) even pulling my travel trailer weighing in at around 10k up 6% grades. Maybe because I backed off too though when I did get near. I have heard that bad things can start to happen at 1250+ for extended periods.
