First test drive after replacing my donut exhaust gaskets, when I put my foot down, I hear a sound that, to me, sounded like a PHSSSSST. I figured it was the new donut gaskets not sealing. A suspicion backed up by the decrease of top end boost and a lack of exhaust brake effectiveness.

The next day, I notice I'm blowin white smoke like a BBQ pit. I guessed that leaky donut rings are causing a lack of drive pressure to the turbo and the truck is running rich because of it.

So today, I decide to take a good sniff of the white smoke to determine if it smells like fuel. Nope, it smells like burning motor oil. On closer investigation, I notice I have oil in my exhaust pipe.  I stick a fingertip in it and take a sniff. It ain't fuel, but oil. I'm hoping that it's oil coming from the turbo center section leaking out the exhaust side. Since I have wet oil in the exhaust pipe tip, that's what I'm praying for. I would think that if it were coming from one of the cylinders, it would pretty much be burned away. As it is now, I'm only about 1 to 1.5 qts low on the dipstick.

So tomorrow, I'm going to pull the turbo (I'm starting to get way too familiar with this procedure.) and pray that the up-pipes and baby's butt are dry on the inside. A turbo is a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Another reason I'm suspecting the turbo vs engine problems, It's running really, really smooth. I think if I'd lost compression on a cylinder, I'd have a "miss" when it ran.:dunno

I would be thinking turbo Kent. I still haven't gotten my donuts completely sealed up yet, haven't had any damn time to do it.

Just got off the phone with Bean. Bean said it sounds like I broke a turbo shaft. He said he recommends a F17250 donut gasket from Car Quest.

He also said his D66 supply issues from last summer have been resolved.

I've got a PASTY in the oven for lunch.

After that, it's surgery time on the truck.

"Dear Lord, please let it be a turbo and not something in the engine, Amen"

Good luck. I hope it is something that can be fixed soon and your truck isn't down and out for a while. The cold front could be bringing some white stuff sometime. It always snows around opening day rifle season.

Trying to fix a truck outside in a snowstorm really, really sucks.

THANK THE LORD!! MY TURBO TOOK A DUMP!!!

The good Lord answered my prayers!!!:woo :woo
I don't have many religous moments, but the moment I pulled the turbo out of the truck, was one of them.

I got the turbo off (in only about 45 minutes at that, is that a record?) and the inside of the babies butt had nothing but glorious, black, nasty, DRY soot!!!

The inlet of the turbine/exhaust side of the turbo was dry too!!:thumbs
But the outlet of the exhaust side was NASTY, thickly coated with a sooty, oily, gooey residue. The turbine wheel had about 1/4" to 1/2" of side to side movement, just a TAD excessive.

If you're thinking, why is this looney-toon so excited about a trashed turbo?
For two reasons:
1) Turbos are a lot less expensive than new engines.
2) I can get a D66 from Bean's and not get b*t*hed at by Mrs TG. :thumbs

This is a good day in the TG household!!!

Now I just have to get my exhaust brake off the old exhaust side, about all of the bolts are siezed. I better go pick up some more wheels for my pneumatic cuttoff tool.
