Ok, I just went on a 5000k trip and on the way back my truck (2001 F350 7.3) started doing the weirdest things. First the turbo kept blowing off pressure at much lower RMS than it should (BTW I was towing about 6k and had a camper on it) usually about 2000 RPM or so. it normally doesn't blow off until around 2600-2800 RPM with a load. So it became almost impossible to do more than about 30k up standard hills I should fly up. I pulled over at the side of the road and checked for codes, I had a code saying that the Barometric sensor had a problem, and I had a code that said that my turbo pressure sensor was having probs. I cleared the codes and returned all programming to stock. All was fine for about 10min when it began to progress again from slight problems to the point at witch I couldn't even drive up a hill. Cleared codes again and all as good for a while.
After reading online through this process I found something that said to disconnect the MAP sensor if these codes were coming up, I did so and the truck ran like it was brand new again. (BTW Disconnecting the MAP sensor is the only thing in this whole process that gave me the check engine light in the dash.) I drove for quite some time, satified that the MAP sensor was the problem until the truck began to miss and run like a bag of crap. I was now unable to even go faster than about 30k on straight roads.
I hooked the MAP back up and pulled more codes, now the codes were telling me that I had an "OPEN CYL 7 Circuit" and a few other major weird ones that I can't think of right now. I cleared them and that didn't fix the problem.
After letting the truck sit for about 10min all was good again. Then after driving for the ferry it acted up again. Getting progressivly worse.
I got on the ferry (FINALLY) and let the truck sit. 1.5hours later I leave the ferry and all is fine and no problems now. Now that I am in my own town I figured I would TRY to make it happen again, so I shift @ 2500RPM and work the truck a little to try to heat it up so to speak. And the turbo begins to blow off pressure early again @ about 2000rpm and the lack of power and trubo problems return, but no codes now. I removed camper and trailer and now I can't even make it return by beating on it.
It appears that this problem is somehow HEAT related maybe? My truck requires a major LOAD to make this happen...

First of all welcome aboard...................glad you found us.

Can you explain this a little. Sounds like you may have a loose intercooler boot.

Thank you! Ok, well maybe blowing off isn't the correct term... But I could hear and feel that the turbo was not winding up to full RPM like it usually does... Normally you feel the turbo start to make power around 1700 - 1800RPM, and increases steadily until about 2700. Well the turbo would wind up, but it started to loose TURBO RPM and power at about 2500, then a couple miles later, it would be around 2200, then 2000 and finally it wouldn't even get a chance to spin up, it would just stop making power... I could hear a PFFFT PFFT PFFT sound like it was depreasurizing or something... Like the waste gate or a relief valve kind of thing...
I swear my problem is temperature related, as I have been unable to beat up my truck enough to make it happen again without having a serious load on it. Even then it takes a number of Miles or a BIG HILL to get this problem started...

FWIW, I'v seen these things have a pin hole leaks in a intercooler boot, usualy the turbo outlet boot, but not allwayz. When enough boost is created, the pin hole opens and releases boost pressure. When this happens, all kinds of sensors send all kinds of Crapola signals to the PCM. The PCM trys to correct things, Performance gets funkier from there.

I go with Tbar, check (or replace) yer I/C boots. They're maybe 6 years old. It's a place to start.

Did you buy yer 01 New ? Do you have Gauges ?

On Edit: Check your Intake boots under the "Y" pipe too.

I am assuming that these holes you can't see? I bought the truck used, but it was old man driven before I got it. 2nd owner... I will have a look around and see if there are any boots or anything that look like they may be loose... I have heard that these trucks sometimes have issues with the connector on the firewall to the PCM and water... Anyone know anything about this?

Most of the time you can't see'm. yul need to remove them one at a time and inspect'm. To each his/her own but you may wana think about replaceing those 6 year old boots. These 7.3s are known for suck'n oil thru the CCV, It can collect on the inside of the boots and after awhile they can go bad, from the inside out.

EASY (!) on the "OLD MAN DRIVEN" part..;) :D.. I'm 63 but still mix it up now'n agin at the occational Red Light, with a Dodge'r Chebby :roflmao

I've heard of the Water verses the PCM but never delt with it myself. Maybe some of the others will jump in.

You have an boot on the right side of the I/C, one on the left side of the I/C, two boot on the top of the Y-pipe and one below the Y-pipe. Check them all. Better yet, take them off clean or replace them cause they are oily as crap.

Ok, sounds like a plan... I will check em out and let you know what I find... As to the Old Man Driven, then I guess you aren't the "OLD MAN" I was referring too... Glad to hear your out there having fun like the rest of us... I will keep everyone posted as to my findings... I will be putting my camper on next week and see if I can make it code out or screw up again...
