On the 7.3 you have two orings. The round one goes on the filter element itself.............there is a groove for it.

The second oring goes on the top edge of the housing........there is a groove that it sits in.

If you have already done the above correctly and still have a leak it is not uncommon for the second oring to be bad. Take it off and put the old one back on to see if that takes care of the problem.

I might add that the top for the fuel filter on the 7.3 has a funky taper cut type o_ring , it sometimes tends to bunch up and get out of the groove, I found if you put some petrolatum or light grease on it and put it on the cap it wil help going back on. the small end of the taper points towards the inside of the filter
if you overtighten it, it will tend to climb out of the wedge as well.
hope it helps

Also if I recall correct the TAPER of the top o-ring faces up. I've had issues before w/ a leak. It is usually bet to pull the cap back oof and start reassembly over to ensure the o-ring is not pinched of improperly placed.

Also my fathers lid had an oring made into it, so the funky taper oring gets thrown in the trash on his truck. So in his case there were three orings. One that seats on the filter groove, one for the cap, and the one made into the cap. His cap looked OEM so maybe thats your problem. :2c

Verrry innnnteresstting. Your saying his OEM lid has an o-ring built in? That's a new one to me. What year is it? My stupid cousin tossed his on his '03 and the replacement we picked up at the dealer didn't have one built in and mine doesn't either.

I haven't had any leaks, knock on wood, when changing the filter. Mine will prolly be removed soon and replaced by a junction block.:D

Here's my dad:whata250 02 model. The o-ring in his cap was a half round type built into it. I will take it off and photo it next chance I get.

I put the large triangle shaped oring on with the angle facing the wrong way and when the fuel pressure hit it......well......lets say I had a lot of cleaning to do under the hood, on the floor, and on the garage wall. I took the cap off, put the triangle ring on the way the instructions showed (who actually looks at instructions.....) and not a drop leaks. Now I make sure to do it the right way.....every time.

This is curious....I installed the top O-ring with the flat side up because when I pulled the cap that's the way I found the old one (photo below). Mine doesn't leak.
