I have a 4cl GM engine in my old 42' GPW. I somehow forgot what the heck it is (crs). I was thinking it was out of a old Vega but for a few various reasons I am now questioning my memory. I know 20 years ago I took the engine serial number to my local dealer and they told me exactly what it was. Today I called around and rather than being able to tell me what it is by serial number they want to know what it is out of  If I knew what it was out of I would already know what it is

If anyone knows a knowledgeable GM parts guy could you see if he can tell me what kind of engine it is. Serial number - T0625E

Crumm, do you know what size the engine might be? It could be a 4 cyl that was originally in the Chevy II in 1962. Chevy had a 4 cyl, 153 cid engine at that time. Years later when the Celebrity (and it's twins) came out in the early to mid 80's, the engine was used in those cars. I had two of them. My 1986 went 151,000 miles and I traded it in on an 89 with the same engine and 51,000 miles, drove it until around 120,000 when it got totalled (almost "totalled" my wife and me). Worst part about them was changing the oil filter when was facing the firewall since the engine was mounted transversely. Also, the '62 engine was 153 cid, but when it was in the cars in the 80's it was listed as 2.5 L (151 cid). Hope this will be of some help to you. You might have to contact someone at GM to get some information or check with a salvage yard to see if they have a catalog with engine numbers.

I think it is a 140 ci out of a early 70's vega but I am now second guessing myself. If stinks when you get old and can't remember anything.

I contacted five dealers and they are all clueless. I know they gave me the information 20 years ago from the serial number but parts guys today ain't like they were 20 years ago. I will check with salvage yard - good idea.

I would bet it is a Chevy II 4 cylinder. Vega motors are Over Head Cam, and would make installing one in a Flat Fender Jeep very difficult; I know I had a CJ-2A Flat Fender a while back.

My guess would be the Chevy II engine from 62-64. I think by 65 they had abandoned the 4 cyl and went with the 194 cid 6 cyl as the base engine.

That is a Chevy II four cylinder. I don't know much more than that.

Would things like a water pump, distibutor cap and other exterior parts be the same on the Chevy II and a early Chevy Vega engine? I changed out a few things back in the early 90's and I am about sure I was buying parts for a Vega :dizzy I wish I had kept better records back then.
