Fuel Filter(s)

I need to replace my fuel filters (I understand there are two)...has anyone done this? Is it fairly simple? List for the filters at my local dealer was about $72 and the quote from service to replace them was ~$150 (including parts)....

Appreciate any thoughts / advice.

Wow! $150 labor for 10 minutes work if that. They are not hard to change at all. One is under the hood and one is on the inside of the driver's side frame rail about center of the drivers door. If it's a 6.0L that is.

You do need a few odd size metric sockets to do it properly though.

36mm socket and ratchet
24mm socket and short extension
6 mm hex

Sorry...I read that again and realized how that sounds...no, I meant to say $150 included the parts. This is a 6.4 and I would prefer to do it myself, not just because of the money savings but also because I prefer not to have the hassle of taking it to the dealer.

I am not sure about the newer 6.4's as I have yet to work on one. I'm sure someone will chime in soon that knows more about them. $150 doesn't sound that bad, as long as the filters are included. Cheers, P.

I am sure it is just like the 6.0 engine, with one on top of the motor and one on the drivers frame. You will need a 36mm socket and a catch pan. Remove the plug on the side of the HFCM and let it drain, then remove the cover using the 36 mm socket wrench. Replace the filter element and button it up. The motor filter is on top of the engine and it also uses a 36 mm socket to remove the top cover. Replace the filter and the top cover and you are all done. Start your truck and let it idle for a couple of minutes to clear the air and you are good to go.

There are a couple of places to get the filters chaeper. Filter1 Wix heavy duty engine, oil, automotive, truck, and tractor filers. is one place I have used.

Be warned: the air in the system takes ALOT longer to run thru than the old 6.0 Let the ignition cycle for 3 -30 second cycles and then when it starts let it run for at least 5 minutes before driving.

I changed my own fuel filters. I bought them at diesel filters online Diesel Filters,Additives,brake rotors, and brake pads for Chevy, Dodge and Ford Diesel Trucks

Get a one gallon catch bucket and open the yellow water separator drain into bucket. Take 36 mm socket and remove upper fuel filter (engine side) cover. Let drain for a couple of minutes until stops. Replace upper filter and cover tighten 20 ft/lbs. Replace lower filter 20 ft/lbs. as well. Close drain valve. Important cycle key 6 times 30 seconds each time to purge air. Restart and let idle 5 minutes and check for leaks.
