Well, it looks like I have joined the head gasket club. Had an unusual whistle coming from drivers side and it was the overflow tank. Lost a little coolant, didn't overheat. Topped off tank after letting truck cool for a few hours in driveway, and presto! Instant white smoke on start-up and you can smell the A/F burning. Dropped off at shop, keeping fingers and everything else crossed. No missing, ran fine...can't wait to see this bill.:eek:

If the HG's are blown, go ahead and get some studs in and be done with it :sweet

There was a post sometime back about heavy duty head gaskets able to withstand 400 to 700 hp. If and when I need to replace the head gaskets on our truck, I will put the studs and the heavy duty head gaskets for extra insurance.
Since the 6.0 is a five year run, it might be good to purchase the heavy duty head gaskets before they stop making them. Just a thought.

from the place i got my head studs from, they told me that since i was stayin around the 400rwhp area, that the OEM head gaskets would do just fine with their head studs.

no need to spend more money if ya dont have too basically.

and maxtor, it was you that pointed me in the direction of the aftermarket head gaskets.

Hey Stephen;

Sorry to hear about your troubles. It does sound like a head gasket. On Trucks TV show, I saw that they make three different aftermarket head gaskets for our 6.0 engines. Stock, 500 hp, and 750 hp versions. The 500 hp gasket did not have to be o ringed, just slip it in place of the oe gasket and all is good. I can't remember who made that gasket though... I will do some research on it.
It seems like when it rains, it pours. If it is a head gasket probelm, you might want to do studs like other earlier posts suggest and the 500 hp head gasket, and all should be fine. If it is a head gasket, they should be able to check the radiator for contamination.

Hey Stephen,,, Just found the website; hypermax head gaskets

Hmmmm I guess I am getting senile. Of course I have known that for a while. Do you remember where I said they were? What company?
Getting old is a challenge every day. :doh:

Turned out to be the egr cooler, cracked and dumping A/F into the exhaust. $1700 later, looks like its fixed. Anyone ever here of them charging a core charge for the cooler or the valve? The service manager hit me with the core charge crap when I told him I want the old parts, and I wasn't digging it. Why would I pay a core on a NEW part? This could get good. -popcorn
