I'm almost ready to do some upgrades to my truck. I want to do the exhaust and the intake also.

On the exhaust, do I want a cat back or turbo back system? If I go with a turbo back system, do I lose the cat? Do I want to lose the cat?

On the intake, I've heard enough to stay away from K&N, but I know nothing else. Which is the better system?

The exhaust is up to you as far as the cat goes. I would like to know why you want to dump a very good intake filter system? It is a bit hard to change, but you don't change it every day or two. It last as long as anything else and breaths good. It is a little $$$ to change.

Personally if you can get away with in your state..... lose the cat, there is no place for a cat on a diesel.

I've read that K&N don't filter good from other diesel sites and gas sites. BUT it is the internet, I personally had a K&N on my rig with the AIRAID set up for the first 50K. I had no problems but I didn;t have the oil scientificly tested either. Once the million mile filter woar out at 50K and was $70+ to replace. I replaced the entire setup with an AFE stage II. Like I said I had no prblems but trusted others opinions. As far as filters go, you can't beat a paper for filtering properties, but they don't flow as much either. There are a lot of guys out there running NAPA paper filters on homemade intakes that love them. Do your homework and make the decision on what YOU WANT OUT OF YOUR TRUCK. Budro

Welcome local poster!!! LOSE the cat, all they check here is safety inspection, horns, lights, tires, brakes etc. We should hook up sometime, there are lots of DFW guys on this site, and we have modification party's at my place on a regular basis. You should come to the next diesel event at WWW.REDLINERACEWAY.COM to see the potential of our rigs. Budro

What Budro sez.. Fer Shur. I also had a K&N F.I.P.K on mine for the first 65K. No problems, at all. K&N has gotn beat up on these sites for some unknown, unfair reason. I went to a FORD AIS.... Just because I like the fresh, cooler, outside air concept.

Any good strait 4" exhaust with a good flow thru muffler will work. No crush bends. Stay away from the BIG BRAND NAME stuff..... All yer payn the BIG bucks for, is the name.

Take a look at the AeroTurbine muffler. I sure like mine. Cooled down my EGTs.

My .03 :dunno

Welcome fellow metroplexer !!!!
after having upgraded my 03 Ex with all the "have to haves" I traded it in on an 05 Ex and haven't really decided what I wanna do to it yet...

but a few insights I can give you from my limited experience:

The stock intake is GOOD, and with the ZooDad mod will flow very well - some have even dynoed and run comparisons on the dyno and seen little to no improvement over stock !
And given the "rumor" of dusted turbos or denied warranty, I'm stayong stock for a while on that end...
(besides, unless you go off road in dust, the stock filter will last 40K + miles and can be replaced online for about $40)

A muffler delete was too loud in the Ex for this ole boy - especially on long trips - the drone would drive ya Wacko !

The inexpensive aluminized turbo back from the local Ft Worth dealer really let the 03's turbo whine come alive !
At first I didn't put the cat back in, but then decided too since my neighbors were throwing stones at my truck when I used the remote start too early in the morning :)
the cat toned down the turbo whine just enough and the way I had it installed, it matched and flowed real well witht he 4" exhaust.

But I did get a sotp increase in power as soon as the turbo back went on...
My bro in law has a catback on his Crewcab 6.0 and it does sound good !!!

on the 05, I am taking my time on it...
(and it's killing me to drive a stock truck :) )

since I'm not after ear splitting sound nor MAX HP to the 1/8th HP, I followed the advice of CHP and replaced my stock muffler with a Walker BTM...
has a good sound without being obtrusive in the cab and is as good a flow thru muffler as was on my turbo back system... chp says it reduces those bad egt's by about 200 or so degrees....

more mods to follow though - for sure.... :thumbs

Any information on how they are making a homemade intake system? Or what filter they are using??

Thanks

Take a peek in my pictures link to my webshots album, there is a picture of my homemade filter set up in there......... The NAPA filter is PN# 6637. You need a couple of constant torque clamps, a 4" exhaust 45° elbow and some kind of filter support bracket to keep the filter in a secure place while driving. I got all my parts from AIRFLOW ONLINE and the filter obviously at NAPA.

Joe G,

Of course everybody has a different thought about your questions. Here's what we have sold a zillion times and had excellent customer feedback on it. Get the MBRP turbo back system and the cat test pipe. This keep your Ford dealer happy as well as the local emmissions test facility too. The test pipe can be use for off road and racing to get max flow etc.

Lots of folks feel the Ford filtration system is very good and it is at stopping dirt, but as far as flowing air is is very poor. I replaced my 1st one at 8000 miles and could tell the difference if performance, it also cost 75.00 bucks back then, now they are approx 50.00 to replace. The AFE Pro Guard 7 Stage I or Stage II is by far the best system at flowing air and stopping dirt. I'll post some independent test results at the end of my post for you to read thru as far as flow rates and dirt stopping performance. Call us if you have any questions, we'll be glad to help.

In the order of filtering efficiency the results are:
FILTER % Efficiency
AC Delco OE 99.93%
Baldwin 99.72%
No name filter (made for gas engine, 1/3 less pleats) 99.32%
AFE ProGuard 7 (73-10062), panel filter 99.23%
WIX/Napa 99.03%
Purolator 98.73%
Amsoil, new style 98.63%
UNI 97.93%
K&N 96.80%

FLOW RESTRICTION FROM BEST TO WORST:
FILTER RESTRICTION in Inches H2O
K&N 4.54
Mystery bargain filter 4.78
AFE Pro Guard 7 Panel 4.99
Purolator 5.05
WIX/Napa 5.06
UNI 5.40
Baldwin 5.71
Amsoil 5.88
AC Delco 6.23
TOTAL DIRT PASSING THE FILTER DURING THE TEST. This is how much dirt your engine will take in if you use the filter for the duration that would cause the filter to become "dirty" enough to need replacement or cleaning. The "Dirt Passing The Filter" is the dirt collected by the "Post Filter" during the test.
FILTER DIRT IN GRAMS PASSED
AC Delco 0.4 g
Baldwin 1.1g
AFE Pro Guard 7 1.8g
Mystery Bargain 2.4g
Amsoil 2.7g
WIX/Napa 4.4g
Purolator 5.0g
K&N 6.0g
UNI 7.9g
Note: The Purolator was reported to have a seal malfunction during the test and passed more dirt than it would have with a good seal.
Interesting. SPICER

Hey Budro,

We met at the Charity Speedway thing last weekend. You were in your little sports car and I was in my red F350. I'm going to check out that redline site when I leave this one tonight.
