in 20 oil changes and at least 17 of those have been sampled ive
never had a poor report...so the 1qt that doesnt drain (out of the
HPOP) at each change isnt something to worry w/.

you SHOULD realize that the TOTAL capcity of the system is 15qt,
if youre putting 15qts IN at each oil change then youre putting in
too much....and it may cause the engine to SURGE a little goin' down
the road at steady throttle.

I agree with you Bush, that 1/15 should not be of to much a concern, but I am some what of a perfectionist, so I will check to see what I can do about the one quart of old oil that might be in the HPOP.
14 quarts of fresh oil, put my dipstick very close to the full mark.
If you re-read my post, I said that I put 14 quarts of new oil in.
Thanks again.
It is always good to hear another persons input.

Hmmm... I'm a little surprised on this one.. I've been putting in 15 qt in mine, and checking it after running, and being shut down for a few minutes, and hasn't shown up as being high. Did they modify the sump for the hpop on the later engines?

Hey Kleetus;

It looks like we have the same year truck. 2006, so the engine components should be the same.
I let mine drain until there was nothing coming out, and when I filled it up with oil, it only took 14 qts to the full mark.

well my count could be off. I"m pouring/guessing from a gallon jug, looking for the fill shadow. I'm thinking of trying the mobil 1 diesel synthetic next time, I'll see what that yields...

how MUCH extra ?

on mine when ive refilled (w/ 15quarts) i got some surging at steady
throttle (probably from the crank dragging or slinging thru the oil
in the pan).

much more than that and you risk ADDED pressure on the seals and
increased blow by.

if youre interested in resolving the situation you could siphon some
outta the pan via the dipstick tube/hole.

consider a fluid evacuators from mity-vac (i own the 7300)...great
for bleeding brakes, clutches, oil changes too...Mityvac

OR if you have a fomoto valve you could just drain/measure off the
amount you wanted...dont have a fomoto valve...get yourself one...and
install it during your next oil change.

If you have the standard oil plug, you could loosen it enough to let out the overage. You might get an arm full of oil, but to much oil can cause problems as Bush has said.

last two oil changes i only put in 13.75 liters. it calls for 14.2 liters....i usually run it for a couple of days and recheck the oil and if it needs more, then i add some....just my 2 cents
