Our truck just ticked off 7500 miles. This is the second oil change, because I wanted the first change to be at about 2,500 miles.
This change I only put in 14 qts. and it filled the dip stick to the full mark. At the bottom of the radiator, there are cooler lines that go into the manual transmissions bellhousing. My guess is that they go to the back of the block and feed into the oil system. This would explain where the other quart of oil that did not drain is. I am going to purchase a service manual for the truck so I will know for sure.
Anyone know for sure on a manual trans truck?

You did remove the oil filter cap before/during the oil drain, correct?

I usually get 14 quarts in, fill it about half way between full and add...

The lines going to the 6 spd are cooler lines for the transmission :)

The lines to the radiator are transmission oil cooler lines. The 6.0 does not use a cooler that is mounted in the radiator. My Ford DVD shows oil lines for the Manual transmission going to the radiator.

Yes, my method is to start the oil from the pan draining, then loosen the oil filter cap, and remove the filter while the oil pan is draining. I then install the new filter and seal, then put the oil pan plug in after it stops draining.
Before starting the oil change, I let the truck sit for eight hours. That should have been enough time for most of the oil to drain back in the oil pan.
Somewhere in the engine is one quart of old oil, if it truly does hold 15 quarts.
That is very interesting that the manual trans has a cooler.
Good information to know.
Thanks Dave and RoyBoy

the HPOP pump holds about a quart of oil and apparently NEVER gets drained at oil change.

It never gets drained, but it does circulate through the engine, so it is not old oil.

Dave
Dave the one quart of oil that is left in the engine, is old, it is just absorbed into the new fresh oil. It would be like taking 14 qts of fresh oil and adding one qt of used old oil, then putting it into a vehicle.
