I just installed isspro guages and I am wondering what normal tems are. I was driving on a level surface with cruise on at about 72-74 mph and was seeing about 850 (pre turbo). My truck is stock f350 lwb drw with 4.30 gear ratio. My trans tems were between 170-180 usually lower 170's. I am just curious what my temps will be when I tow my 5th wheel (approx 14,000). Thanks for any help. Ed

600 to 900 degrees F cruising on flat ground as you were. Looks good. You want to avoid 1200+ degrees when towing for any length of time, more than a few seconds. I use 1300 as my absolute maximum temp, and only for a second or two MAX. Aluminum melts at that temperature and you will hole a piston.

That is in the ball park with mine. Now that you have guages, get back to your cruising speed and play with the throttle a little and you will see how easy it is to change that temp. As far as the temp when towing your 5th wheel, I don't think you have to worry. Someone CORRECT me if I am wrong but I don't believe the stock ECM will let the temps get hot enough to hurt anything.

As Scott says...it doesnt take much "lift" of the throttle
to see the temps drop <instantly>.

I once heard <and feel that its fairly accurate...for a generalization
anyway>...consider EGT temps should close to a factor of 10x
that is to say 75-80 should show you 750-800*

remember thats a generalization...% of throttle position/pressure
will have a huge impact...not to mention uphill grades...and ambient
temps <summer vs winter>

bottom line is the temps youre seeing are w/in the range that i see,
even towing (6-7k) i have to really romp on it to see 1100* (remember
im in flat arse texas).

your tranny temps seem a little high though...my gauge has temp #s
at 150 & 180 (so the hash mark in between those two numbers is about
165*) i RARELY see it reach the has mark...and unless im towing in
stop and go traffic have i EVER seen it hit the 180* mark.

even in situation where i have seen 180*...as soon as i get it out on
the open road the trans temp will fall off the 180 mark and back to
the 165 hash mark

empty...round town or on the interstate (at high speed 80+)
my trans temps have never gone above the 165* mark

My tranny temp runs the same as yours Bush. Would it make a difference that he is running 4.30 gears compared to my 4.10? Not sure that it would make that much of a difference but it is the only thing I could think of.

I've got the 3.73 and run in the 160's too. Guess the higher the ratio the higher the tranny temp it would seem.
