EBPV question

Evening all,

Have a few question about the EBPV system. I know its function is "supposedly" help warm the engine faster by creating back pressure in the exhaust. It does this when the air temp is cold enough for it to do so. Now for the questions. First around what temp dose this system become active. Second Should the EBPV stop working after the engine is up to operating tempature.

I only ask these question after the last few days my truck is acting strange. After driving a while,even about 25 miles, at highway speed I can feel the valve opening and closing by feeling the increase in power. At times it will do it at highway cruising speeds of 65MPH. Assuming the back pressure sensor is tied into this I believe it to be working because when I start to pull a grade, it opens almost immedatly. Today, the engine was warmed up to op. tempature when I had to accelerate hard to merge into traffic and to my surprise the EBPV was closed giving me almost no power, then it suddenly open and all was well. All this was while the outside temps were mid 40's to low 50's

Just looking for some input on whether or not this is normal, or do I have some issue somewhere.

Don't know the (or if there is a) exact temp for the EBPV to close but one of the primary sensors to operate it is on the Air Filter Box. It's an Ambient Air Temp Sensor. Check to see that it's in place, not fouled and that the connector is clean.

The Oil Temp and Coolant Temp are the main sensors that deactivate the EBPV to it's (default) Open position. Check those connectors for being Clean and tight too ??

(some just disconnect the EBPV. I installed a switch (kit) to where I had control of it's operation. Used it when I needed/wanted it for warm ups.. used it as an Exhaust Brake.. of sorts.. for towing)

while the EBPV system will cause a noticeable difference in power (can be perceived as a light drag on the brakes), it SHOULD NOT prevent the engine from accelerating..

I think I'd pop the connector off the ICP sensor and check it for contamination (oil), corrosion (moisture), or loose pin contact.

I hadn't given the ICP a though, though I'm still convinced it's the EBPV as I can hear the air hiss / hair dryer sound when its lacking power and the instant it stops I have full power again. Also the engine is accelerating but slowly until what ever it is goes away.

Thanks for your input, I will add that to the list of things to check.

mine does that too when it was super cold around here I would be driving home on the interstate I would let off for the hills and the valve would close I would get back into it and could feel it shut the engine temp was in the 180 range and the oil temp was around 150 normal temps for the super cold -10 weather laity. I think it has some to do with the intake temp too which was reading less than 0. And it does limit acceleration when full shut I was accelerating and the pyro would skyrocket to 1300+ read on my Bullydog which is my defuel set point. And it took a long time to get up to speed.

you might want to check your intake and all charge air piping to make sure that you don't have a leak. lacking power, hissing noise, slow acceleration. all sound like a pressure induced leak.

If it was the intake piping, wouldn't it be constant and not stop? Also this afternoon on the way home from work, It was doing something I hadn't noticed before. After driving about 20 or so miles at highway speed I come in to some stop lights and slower traffic. While driving like this with a steady foot on the throttle, the noise is back but real erratic. As an example 1/2 second hear it, 1/2 second dont hear it, 2 seconds later hear it for a sec, then dont hear it. Sort of like a morse code pattern.

A though just came to mind, what about a clogged back pressure tube, mount, and/or sensor? What ever is going on, it's getting annoying real fast.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm kinda new to turbo diesels.
