I've got a 99 PSD, but I have been comming across lots of parts and topics that differentiate between early '99 and late '99. Such as the "wicked wheel" thing and IC pipe insulation. Whats the deal with the early '99s? Do they have the wicked wheel stock? Also, my truck does not have any insulation on the IC tubes. I don't have much reason to suspect the previous owner removed them as the whole truck is stock. If some one could fill me in on the differences between early and late '99s that would be great. What months of the model year dictate "early" and "late"? I know I've got lots of questions here but I'm still new to this!

Thanks!

Ok I've done some research and found some answers to some of my questions... Why though would you "upgrade" to a wicked wheel out of a early turbo if the early turbo is smaller to begin with? If you had a early '99 with intake, exhaust and a tune, how much less power is it going to produce due to the smaller turbo and related parts compaired to a equally modded late '99 7.3?

Jason,

I installed the Wicked Wheel on my 2003 (Van turbo) to reduce turbo surge. I believe the design was changed in '99 because of the turbo whistle. Some people didn't like it so they changed the blade angles to reduce the whistle. Now, everyone wants the whistle! (at least the folks on this site do!)Anyhow, not 100% sure but that is what I read somewhere a while back...

So with my truck (early 99) how much less potential does it have compaired to a 99+ 7.3? Funny I didn't think the turbo was that loud compaired to my boss's 05 6.0 PSD... But my truck is still stock.

Ok so the deal between the two of them were really. Intake plenum, and intake manifolds, and up-pipes, and turbo, hpop, and injectors were all smaller in the early 99'. They weren't smaller by much but they were smaller. I believe the two big things when adding a chip or a programmer, are the injectors and hpop. The early 99' injectors are supposed to flow 120cc, while the late flow 140cc. I think those are the correct numbers. The hpop of the early won't sustain the oil pressure like the late hpop will. They may have changed the hpop in 2000, but don't think so. This being said, advertised hp numbers by a chip or programmer are for the bigger injectors and hpop. There isn't near the decrease as their is in the obs trucks, but there is some. I would say the decrease is prolly about 10% or so. Sorry for the length, and if anything is wrong, is so someone will correct me. But there ya go in a nutshell.

The reasons your boss's 05 was loud was because of the 6.0 VGT. Which will scream.

HPOP is refering to the oil pump that supplies oil press to the injectors right? I'm still trying to nail down the terminology! If i'm looking at 10% less HP for the same mods compaired to a later model truck thats alright with me... I'm not looking to do a hell of a lot to her besides the intake, exhaust, and a chip from TDP. Also going to dump in the factory tech vavle body I had for my Lightning. Is there any other performance related stuff I should look into that would be different for a early 99? BTW what is a "obs truck"

Thanks all for the responses!

The 97 and earlier weren't intercooled, right? So your saying that i'm looking at 5 or 6% less hp/tq mod for mod compaired to a later 7.3? Thats not so bad... I suppose if I was going to try and get the most possible out of it, that would be a big deal... but I've got a race car for that! Its already a big enough money pit! This is just supposed to tow it... and have some fun blowing smoke at ricers ;)

The only small problem is when you start to go bigger, ie turbo... You have to replace the intakes, up pipes, flange and pedestal. Not that bad but it still is a PIA. HPOP can be swapped out for a later 02-03 pump and the injectors once put on a flow bench, they are normaly VERY close to the same...
