OK, OK i know this is a Ford site but, the fiance got a '99 durango with the 5.2L V-8, 63,000, in great shape.
Any one had expiriences with these to tell me what to watch out for?
What exhaust would sound good on that?
What would be a good aftermarket intake to help out the gas milage and performance?

Thanks fellas
Neal

My buddy has a durango with 5.2L (318) which he drives hard everyday day of the week. His truck has been problem free. I'm not sure what exhaust would sound the best but I would buy a flowmaster or magnaflow cat-back kit. As for the gas mileage an air intake will use more fuel but will help with performance. I would just go with a K&N OE replacement. He did notice a difference in feul mileage when he removed the clutch fan and replaced it with an electric fan.

I had a 99 Dakota 2WD with the 5.2 and driven properly it would get 19 all day long. Flowmaster or magnaflow would be my choice on the exhaust as well. Just do a drop in KN for the filter.

It was a good running, good looking pickup. I got rid of it because I needed a 4x4 and my local dealer sucked.

My mom had a durango with the 5.2 4x4. No problems, but she said the gas milage was horrible. About 10-11 mpg.

I had a a Dodge Dakota with the 318cid, and got rid of it for the exact same reason as posted above. Regardless of what I did, I could never get decent mpg's out of it. That was my only complaint with the truck. The 4X4 was great, I liked the layout of the interior yada yaday yada. Moved up to the PSD I have now.

1 problem with the 318 is there is a plate on the bottom of the intake.the gasket for this plate gets sucked into the intake or the lifter valley of the engine and causes all kinds of problems.itll skip, ping, low fuel mileage and power, run hot and fail emissions testing.the PCM will throw codes for O2 sensors,TPS and other various fuel/emissions management systems.

another issue with all chrysler gas engines is if the throttle body gets carboned up they wont run or will run like crap.gotta clean the throttle bodies every 6 months or so.remove the IAC(idle air control)motor and clean that as well

the rear end just loves to eat pinion bearings. seen them in as soon as 40k if they were lifted with bigger tires or towed alot. other wise normal use seems to put them out around the 80-100k range.
