sounds like he didnt have the option but if I leave when it's going to be very cold I shut the water off entirely and drain the house lines. When do they come home? Or, do they know yet about the house?

We were out of town a couple weeks ago, and there were multiple single digit days while we were gone. I shut off the main water line in the basement and opened up a bunch of faucets to allow any remaning water in the lines the room to expand if it froze. Also opened up the cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom so that the warm from the rest of the house would keep the pipes warm. I set the thermostat and 67* and went on my merry way to the Caribbean!

I bet ya if they could do it all over again, they would GLADLY pay that little extra money it would of cost to leave the thermostat on the setting it was on before they left!

That driveway actually looks familiar, so getting my wife to check the pictures and see if she knows where it's at. 11524 22nd Ave South just off 115th street is where her folks live and she grew up. Turn left at 117th then that right for the frontage rd. I actually miss it up there. Crazy I know.

What am I not understanding here? Water wont freeze at 50°, so the furnace must have quit totally?

the water line that runs inbetween the ceiling of the lower level and what is the floor of the upper level that runs to the outside front water facet BROKE inside the wall

Yes, but in a wall with a draft, bad insulation spot, it will freeze no problem, specially with a little breeze :cold 3

Is there any state besides California and Florida that the temperatures are above 70 degrees in the day and above 35 degrees at night?
Sounds like the whole country east of Calif. has turned into a deep freeze.
We see snow once in about every five years and it lasts for about one day. Record low here is 17 degrees above.
