Driving a Money Pit
Not a bad post for your first. Good point. Ill shy away from that one.
aklim said:My best wishes to you then. O1 trans, depending on when it was built have the infamous diode in it. I wouldn't touch an 01 trans unless I know it has been rebuilt. I had one and it was a mess. One day it was fine and suddenly......
See the blurb below copied from here.
The 2001 Models built for August 2000 to March 2001 are the ones with a mechanical diode, all other models have a 34 element sprag from the factory. All Monster Boxes, irregardless of year are built with the 45 element sprag assembly. A mechanical diode is one form of a one way clutch. When the E4OD came out in 1989, it had a sprag one way clutch on the top of the direct drum, and it worked great for 12 years. So Ford in 2001 changed it to the mechanical diode, which didn't work great and after literally 8 days, they realized it was not going to work. The only problem was that all the tooling for the original sprag was destroyed already and it took Ford 6 months to get new machines to go back to the way that they always were. The units built during those 6 months are the diode units. The diode has a different clutch plate pattern, different direct drum and an integral race. To replace one with a sprag, you need to replace all these parts.
You might end up penny wise and pound foolish.

so does that mean i cant do a sonnax kit and whatnot?
i planned on sending it to BTS in the summer when i can drive my mustang while the truck is down. should i just send him my core and buy one from him thats built the right way or what? im so confused lol.
i was intrested in doing the sonnax for the time being until i can afford to send it to brian. i was thinking today and i talked to the guy who had the truck before me (traded it in to the dealer i work at) and he said he had a trans put in 3 months before he traded it (warranty), so i would assume ford would install a new one since they changed the design? either way ill probably just wait on anything until i can get one from brian.aklim said:It is not so much about the truck build date. It is when the trans was built. For instance, you could have a truck built in Feb 2001 BUT your trans was built in Sep 2000. There is only one definative way I know of for telling what you have and that is disassembly.
Why are you wasting your money and time with the sonnax when you are planning to send it to BTS in the summer? Know why I am so sore with the 2001 trans? Because 1 month after I but the BTS Valve Body in (Easier to do than the sonnax) my diode locked up. Fortunately for me Brian gave me credit for the VB. I can't honestly say I would do the same in his place. I mean, taking a VB that was in a trans that had toasted fluid? Would you? However the lot of synthetic ATF was a loss.
I had him ship me a trans. It came in a nice case. I got the old trans out of the truck, had the new one installed, stuffed the old one in the case and sent it off to Fedex Freight. All nice and neat. Never left town. When you pay him for the trans, there is also shipping both ways and a core. I also got a local tech to do it for $250 on the side.
