Computer help please

Howdy all,
I don't know if it is my computer or my ISP but between the two this thing is slower than dirt! I have SBC GLOGBAL DSL, my computer is about 2 years old it has an 100GB harddrive and 512MG of RAM. I don't do any gaming on it, I have Norton Antivirus, frequently check for spyware, do the disk defragmenter and scan disk, blah, blah, blah.
I was trying to watch the videos posted by some of you fellows on the B-1 and got tired of watching a 3 seond clip and then pause............................ another 3 sec clip, pause.................................. and so on. After about 20 minutes I gave up.
What else could cause it to run so slowly? I am calling SBC in the morning just in case it is on their end.

Disable Norton and see if that helps.

compare that to your ISPs advertised speed.

then, you can also ping the video hosting site(s), to see if those servers are lagging.

Thanks for the replies. I can't (don't know how) to disable Nortons as it is tied into the SBC Package. On Speakeasy my download time is 27.5Kb/sec and my upload is 73.6Kb/sec.

call SBC and bytch. A DSL line should be five or six times that speed.. download should be at least 1000kb/s, mine's like 1250kb...

Yeah...

That's slower than the slow Verizon wireless Data connection I get up at the cabin.

Sounds like a problem on your ISPs end.

Check the lights on the modem when you are not doing anything. If they are going crazy you have some kind of virus junk running and plugging up the connection, if not then there is a connection issue. Have you already unplugged the modem and plugged it back in? That works 90% of the time.

My DSL modem has been acting like it is not working until I go its local webpage (192.168.1.1) then it works fine.

I have had to do that quite frequently lately. Yesterday I got booted off the SBC DSL server 5-6 times and had to go to 192.168.1.1 to reestablish the connection with the modum. Its startin pizz me off.

If you haven't done a system scan since trying to watch those videos, do it. Make sure your virus definitions are up to date also.

I'm running Norton 2006 for viruses and Spysweeper for spyware and they both caught the Trojan virus and the spyware the website downloaded. A good anti-spyware program that is available for free is SPYBOT
