Changing the oil on 6.0

changing the oil yourself is a cake walk... install one of these --

QuickOilDrainValve.com - the best way to change oil

do NOT re-fill w/ 15quarts...fill using between 13.5 & 14q (to prevent
surging)

I wouldn't use a drain valve. The threads to the valve extend beyond the inside of the pan so you don't fully remove all the oil.

I bought a Fumoto drain valve and installed it on my X. At the next oil change I turned the lever and all the oil came out - OR so I thought. For kicks I removed the Fumoto drain valve and almost another 1/2 quart of oil came out. Sure it might be easier to drain the oil but the whole purpose of draining the oil is to get rid of ALL of it.

Secondly, I always have filled my 6.0 engine with 15 quarts of oil. My first oil change I put in 14 qts and ran the engine for a few minutes and turned it off. Checked oil dipstick and it was a little low. I added another 1/2 quart and did same thing. A little better but still low. I put the remaining 1/2 quart in and restarted engine, shut off and checked oil. It was perfect. Now I always install 15 qts.

The 6.0 engine is good getting almost all of the oil out the engine especially when you remove the oil filter. All that oil drains into the oil pan.

I always make sure then engine is hot when I drain the oil. This insures the oil is hot and thin letting it come out real easy.

Well, Nascar, you have a point, but when you change the oil there is still about a quart in the HPOP and related hardware. Fumoto or not there's still some residual oil in there.

14 qts. no more!

I read on a different forum (or was it this forum:confused: ) since my last post that a new PSD engine takes 18 quarts at the factory. About 3 quarts remain in block, HPOP reservoir, oil rails, branch tubes, stand pipes, etc., when the engine is drained for an oil change. 15 quarts should reach the full mark on the dip stick.

So, I will go with 15 quarts on my next oil change just like the 6.0L Oil Change Guide says.:sweet

nope the 6.4 is the same block, 15quarts <when BONE DRY>
14 quarts MAX on refill ! dont beleive it...read your owners manual
and measure what you drain off !

Dip stick = 2 qts!!!!!

That same publication (page 40) states the operating range on the PSD dipstick represents 2 QUARTS!!!! When I have been driving around fat, dumb, and happy with my oil level mid-way on the dip stick, I've been a whole quart low!!!!!!!:eek:

Because it is normal to add some oil between oil changes, check your
engine oil level each time you stop for fuel. To check the engine oil level
consistently and accurately, the following procedure is recommended:
1. Have engine at normal operating temperature (at least into the
NORMAL range on the engine coolant temperature gauge).
2. Park the vehicle on a level surface, then turn off the engine and open
the hood.
3. Allow at least 20 minutes after engine shutdown to assure that the oil
contained in the upper parts of the engine has returned to the oil pan.
4. Protecting yourself from engine heat, pull out the dipstick, wipe it
clean and reinsert fully.
5. Read oil level on both sides of dipstick and use highest level (reading)
for the actual engine oil level.
6. Maintain the oil level between ADD and OPERATING RANGE on the
dipstick by adding oil as required. The distance from ADD to OPERATING RANGE on the dipstick represents 1.9L (2 quarts). Do not overfill. If the oil level exceeds OPERATING RANGE, oil consumption
may result."

Note to self: When all else fails, RTFM!!!

So you're gonna stop for fuel, wait 20 minutes for the oil to drain down, then check the oil?

Not likely...

put more than that in and youll be asking for trouble !

just cause you can put TWO MORE QUARTS IN doesnt mean you SHOULD

Yep. I'm with Bush on this. 13.5-14 quarts seems to be the magic number. You can foam the oil easily if you add too much. :doh:
