I am nearing the need for changing my fuel filter. How much fuel drains out and does it ever stop (before the fuel tank is empty :D )?

I will change the drain plug with the knurled brass one I bought.

You should get about half a quart or less. Yes it will stop before your tank runs dry. Just doesn't seem like it will.

Have a couple different containers handy when you do the frame mounted filter. It'll run down the frame on the crossmember and it'll drip from right under the filter. You might be able to minimize the damage if you place a couple old towels along the frame. :2c

It's been recommended to raise the backend to reduce the fuel coming out, but I had better luck with the vehicle level. :dunno Just get ready for a diesel bath. -popcorn

On my 02 Ex - did it fine :)
on my 03 it never stopped draining -
even after TWO 2 liter bottles :)

getting ready to try it on the 05...
can't find my specialty drain bottles - will have to remake...

get a 2 or 3 liter plastic coke bottle - cut out about half the top so it acts as a funnel that you can stick up past the drain hole and it will catch most of it...
(remember to retrieve the drain bolt before you throw it out :) )

From Oilburners:

Want to change your horizontal Fuel filter w/o the mess?
Just tried this and it worked great.

Take a piece of tin foil and make a catch area under the filter along the frame rail. make sure you have a "funnel" at one end. Loosen the cap and you have a clean filter change.

Check the attached photo.
