Black smoke when idling

I have been "tuned" to anything unusual and now for the first time today, I noticed more than usual black smoke while idling.
Is this anything to worry about? It has 6000 miles on it now.

No black smoke on my 06, but she is run hard most of the time.

I have never seen black smoke at idle on any diesel I have owned.
Powerboatr may be right, drive her.

black = over fuel'ed
blue = oil
white = coolant (steam)

Agreed.. black at idle isn't a good thing... you might be on the verge of an EGR issue. My buddies 04 did that and kept doing that, so much so that he went and traded it for a duracrap.

I have floored it only once at about 2000 miles. I will give that a try first. Our truck has not seen anything over 2000 rpm in quite a while, and normally ease it through the gears.

Take it out and hit 3+ grand a few times, can't really baby these engines. And they don't like to idle unless its high idle.

only once ?? man everytime mine goes out it sees
full boost in more than a couple <automatic> gears !

I have two race cars to thrash when I get the urge. I baby our truck, and that might be a bad thing to do. I'll take it out today and open it up,,, probably will smoke out the neighborhood, until the carbon is out (if that is the problem).
185 mph is top speed on the below.
