o.k. per someones advice, i checked my batteries seperately (in the vehicle) from each other. i disconnected the pass. one first. tested fine. hooked it back up. disconnected the driver side, tested not so good - said charging system needs repair. hooked it back up and did the 'in the vehicle/start test' and got same results. all of this was on cold batts., they sat overnite of course and it was cold that day. SO, i went to see the mechanic at work and asked him for clarification on my results. his first thought was i did not put in the correct cca # into the tester. so he went out and did it. they both tested fine. he then put the 'load' tester on and both tested out fine.
:dunno :dunno i am so thoroughly confused now. whatever, i am gonna go by what he says.

here lies my question: while driving today, i looked at fuel gauge and it was at half, so i clicked the trip to see what miles on a half tank was and it said 33.1. i kinda freaked for a second. why would the trip reset if i totally never disconnected both batteries at the same time?

can i get some clarification please.

oh, and a side note: my hubs are locked up again (third time is the charm). going in on wednesday to figure out wtf is going on. this is starting to chap my hide. they think THINK it could be the sensor on the passenger side fenderwall.....anyone, anyone. i asked if it was a re-occuring issue and he said NOPE. great, just my luck.

How OLD are yer Batteries ??

The reason I ask is.. With all the Whizo Sparktronics on these thingz, these dayz.. If yer Batts arent in good shape, >Equally< Compatible, as a Pair..with good, clean connections, connected with Good.. un-corroded cables.. All kindz of weird crap can happen. Drives you Nutz.

You said that one Batt waz "Not So Good" .. could be yer problem. As you were T-shoot'n.. when hookn & unhookn things... Maybe a Whizo thing occurred that reset/scrambled yer Trip meter.

2 new Batteries might be a place to create a Base Line.

On Edit. Maybe yer drive to work put a good Surface Charge on yer "Not So Good" Battery ?? Ive seen Batteries load test, "Good", but when the load waz left on it for a bit, they shot to "Bad", when the Surface Charge dissipated.

they are original '03. his testing found them o.k. my testing found them not o.k. as i said, load test said o.k. too. that is the part i don't understand. i don't want to be a 'tech' and throw $$/parts at something that is not the problem. which is why i am asking for other opinions. yes, i could just go spend $150+ for new batteries only to find out it is the alternator or something else.

Well at about 5 years old, I would expect the lead acid's to be giving it up... could even have some sulfation (which is some crud floating around falling from the plates) giving you some odd results. I'd think about changing them, and do them both. You change one you're asking for problems, and lots of them.

The meter being off? hand to say. maybe they pulled both batteries off or during the urge of the testing it dropped the voltage low enough it burped.

As far as the hubs are concerned, are they being commanded to stay locked, or just won't release? Pop the vacuum line off the backside of the hub and plug the truck end with a golf tee or something, it should be unlocked just about as soon as you move the truck, otherwise, the hubs are gummed up and frozen.

No offense, this is why I went with manual hubs.

jim carey said it best: IT WAS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

i did the batt. test and did not take them out or disconnect both at the same time. (just for clarification)...yeah, i don't understand why it would have erased the trip either..... i have just come to the realization that it probably needs batteries and OR an alternator too. look at it this way, the only thing not replaced on this truck has been the seats so far...:dizzy
and as for the hubs, they are not dis-engaging - and seems this time they engaged too. it is going in tomorrow, they told me not to touch anything, he seems bent on the fact it is the relay up under the hood on the pass. side fender. all dash lites/gauges indicate its in 2x, but at full turn she binds up something fierce. that is how i noticed it the other day. i told him i had not touched the switch since it was in last (as we have had no snow for over a month now:doh: ) - which is why i said it seems to have engaged them too. i will find out tomorrow
