So the last time I torqued my lugs was 2 weeks ago, all was good then. Over the weekend we took a 1000 mile trip north with no signs of trouble. Monday morning I hook up the work trailer and head out. 60 miles to my first stop, all ok. 80 Miles to my second stop, I made it about 78 of them. As I exited the freeway my drivers side rear came off. No warning no vibration, over in 3 seconds. I checked the rest of them and the passenger side was on it's way also. I'm glad it held on until then, 20 seconds earliier I was going 70+ surrounded by Semis. The center cover was back about 500 ft with all the lugs still locked in it. Between body damage mechanical damage and towing bills (2 trucks) I had a $3500 monday morning.

Sorry about the shadow. If I took the pic right you would see all the studs bent in toward the center and threads packed with aluminum.

wholly cow, that is weird, I first thought the trailer wheels had come off. I have never had an issue with the lugs staying tight. Good thing your not injured,

I've seen the same damage on a few other trucks also. I say screw the 150/ft/lb torque spec I'm going higher. What else could it possibly be besides intentional loosening or too low of a spec for the weight I carry. Over the weekend we were in an area of Michigan without many people so I can't imagine I pissed anyone off enough to do it intentionally.

One thing I did notice was the back of the spacer between the nut and the wheel seemed to be smoother than it should be. There are ridges on the back that lock into the wheel and they are hardly there. I'll compare them with a new one when I pick the truck up. -popcorn

No X-wife to piss off. Only married once & all OK :)

my tq has been on both trucks 165 ft lbs on the alum wheels, i thought it covered the single wheel guys as well, there was even a mailer that came out about the alum wheels and lug nut tq. changes to get proper clamping force withthe hub centric wheels..:dunno
