Mrs TG's 08 Pontiac G6 is going to need new tires before the snow flies. I've been shopping, but the price of 17" tires is nuts. I looked at the cost of 16" tires in comparison and they are MUCH LESS than 17's.

So what I've been thinking of doing is putting 16" wheels & tires on it and selling the 17" wheels. I can almost buy a set of 16" wheels & tires for the price of 17" tires alone. I'm sure I can find a 16" tire with the same overall rolling diameter as the 17's. Over the life of the car, I can save hundreds of dollars by getting 16" tires instead of 17".

So my question is this: will a set of 16" wheels for a 2006 Pontiac G6 fit a 2008 Pontiac G6? There are no clearance issues around the caliper, gobs of space. I think we have a few tires guys aound here, input appreciated. Thanks

We're thinking all season radials.
Not too concerned with ultra-high summer performance.

Currently there are 225/50r17 on it. Replacements from what the tire dealerships tell me, cost about $150 each plus tax and all the fees. Hell, the tires on my truck didn't cost much different than that.

I'd like to get some 16's on it. I can get some real decent tires for about half that or less.

It's the rims I'm wondering about. Whenever you go to a rim website and punch in 2008, all the choices come up 17" or 18". The 2006 G6 had 16's, but I'd like some sort of confirmation they'll fit a 2008.

I did some looking..
they did a brake upgrade mid-year (sound familiar?)
if it's got 10.8" brake rotors on it, 16's will fit.
if it's the later, 11.6" rotor, 16's are a no-joy...

Are the lug pattern/size the same? The current 17" rims have almost 2" of clearance between the caliper and the rim, enough for a rim only 1" smaller in diameter.

You also have to look at the height/circumference of the tires. They need to be the same or your speedometer will be off.

I'm looking at some 225/55R16. According to the tire spec's web site I was looking at, diameter was only .1" off, not enough to be noticable in any tangible way.

The width was maybe .5" narrower, which will be better in snow/ice.
