Are the lug pattern/size the same? The current 17" rims have almost 2" of clearance between the caliper and the rim, enough for a rim only 1" smaller in diameter.

yeah.
lug circles are the same.
the only thing they changed was to bigger brakes, necessitating the larger wheel
