i noticed a slow crank this morning and realized its time for new batteries. So are the optima batteries really worth the extra money? They look cool and everything but I dont wanna throw down the extra $100 or so for these if there not gonna be worth it.

No.

Best battery in my opinion is Motorcraft. I have some that are 15 years old and still going strong.

I was told Optima Batteries don't have good enough Cranking Amps for Diesels - I just bought two new motorcraft ones for mine.

I'm firm believer in the motorcraft batteries also. I've seen them go 8+ years without any problems.

Optima(ha)

Optima batteries belong in rice burners and not in diesel's, they do have enough cca & ca to start your truck but like you said the extra money is the concern, the only advantage is the spill proof design and resistance against vibration, motorcrafts are my only choice and as you see here the other guys agree, i've had mine for 6 years and they are in theory only good for 5. I live in new england and every winter, big blue fires right up.

I used Optima Batteries on my offroad truck only for safety reasons. A Motorcraft Battery will outlast a Optima easily. My 1st set of Motorcraft Batteries lasted 190k miles and 8 years in my F350. I replaced them with Motorcraft BXT-65-850s. On top of that the Motorcraft Battery has a 3 year free replacement and a 100 month overall warranty.

This ONE area that you don't want to go cheap. Spend the money and get the best battery you can find. I use either Sears or Motorcraft.

With those symtoms its a good idea to do it now when the truck still starts - sucks being stranded with dead batteries.
