I'm in a different boat, I've got a "dependent" that I can't claim.:(

Our 24 year old daughter moved back home. She's not pitching in for rent or anything else for that matter. I'm not real happy about it, but she moved back home after breaking up with the A-HOLE boyfriend she used to have. It took over a year of everybody in the family and all her friends trying to convince her what an intolerable jerk he was. Once she broke up with him, she finally saw the light.

So bad news, I can't write her off on taxes because of her age.:dunno
Good news, the jerk is gone. :thumbs :sweet

Does age matter ?
Used to be if you are paying over 50% support then that's a dependent isn't it ?????
and u could count a % of the house, food, fuel, etc....
I'd look into it :)

Last time I looked, when it came to children, you could only claim them until 18 unless they were students going to college. Then you could claim them until 24 or so. My daughter isn't in school, she's just working part time trying to fund her car and make her credit card payments. :dunno :dunno Her boss has been telling her for the last 2 years they are going to make her full time, but it hasn't happened yet.

I went and looked it up after reading this yesterday and it appears to me (from my reading at http://www.irs.gov) that 24 is the limit and then only if they're a full time student unless they are mentally or physically handicapped. I was shocked at that. I went down in the basement and kicked both of my 20 year old sons in the ass. . . . .

:)

They're in college so they're still ok. :)

Have a good one,
Dave

I wish the standard deduction came even remotely close to offsetting the expenses involved in raising children.

Speaking of dependent's, I am a D.I.N.K. (dual-income, no kids) so I get screwed every year good an proper. I guess since I don't have kids, i don't need MY money as much as I would otherwise, so they go ahead and get it off my hands for me, and give it to someone else that is more deserving. I tried to explain them that even though I don't have kids, I have an old house that I am remodeling, a truck that needs to be modified, a SERIOUS hunting addiction, and two dogs that depend on me to feed them and take them hunting every weekend. They just laughed and said

!@#$ YOU, PAY ME!!! :roflmao

I just tell myself that my money is going to get bigger, better, safer, faster, and deadlier gear for our boys and girls overseas, and that everybody else is paying for all the other worthless crap. It helps me sleep at night.

Nope using all my dependants!

Let's see, 10 months in the "zone" FITW for year 05 = 5,890.00 Wife full time student, wages 6,000, 2 children + childcare, New expedition (for the wife), bought a house paid 18,000 in interest and taxes.

Would anyone like to donate to the poor airmans fund, please disregard the total wages YTD of 92,000, not including trip per diem money. :)

That is an interesting question. Are your parents still employed or have substantial income? Do you provide for more than half of their welfare? If they are not employed, have substantial interest income, they are probably exempt from taxation and you MAY be able to claim them. If you provide for more than half of their welfare I THINK you may have something there. Check with your tax advisor. Be prepared to DOCUMENT your expenditures if you choose to deduct your parents. You are providing housing, some utilities, auto insurance, and some food. They will not be able to take a personal deduction on any return they would be liable to file for any taxes they may owe if you do this. (that's why I ask if they are working or have substantial interest income).
