Today while trying to take back some materials from a job I lost all throttle response from my truck. 2006 F-350 6.0 PSD 47000 miles. I was able to make it to the side of the road. It is like the truck went into limp mode. I was cruising along at 55mph and all of the sudden the truck just start shaking. I got off of the throttle for a second and then eased back in and my RPM guage was sitting at 700 and start jumping to about 1100 while I had any pressure at all on the throttle and I was boiling black smoke out of the exhaust. Once I got stopped and got out of the truck I could smell a god awful burning smell. At first no warning lights or anything came on. After I cut the truck off for a minute I tried starting it again to see if the problem had corrected itself. No such luck and then the service engine light popped on.

I had to call a tow truck to come and get the truck and take it to the dealer and then call someone to come get me and move over 1400 lbs of concrete to another truck to take back. Hopefully warranty will cover my tow bill.

Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

i dont know of any warranty that covers towing <unless its in an extended warranty>.
check your insurance policy for coverage.

what was the boost gauge doin during all of this ?

based on the lack of "go" id GUESS that its the HPOP connector leak.

could be vgt related but you should have seen an un-natural boost
pressure (more boost than go)

bushpilot, I didn't notice anything really with the boost it was just all of the sudden no go. They are supposed to get it in the shop this morning and start diagnosing the problem. I have got to call them around lunch today to see what is going on.

Heres some info on the HPOP (links below).

In short...the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) drives
the injectors...the MINIMUM pressure required to
Start the engine (fire the injectors) is 500psi.

At WOT (wide open throttle) the maximum pressure
developed by the HPOP is something just shy of 4000 psi.

The ICP & IPR sense & regulate the pressures.

you can read more about the sensors here -->
Page 61: Electrical Components

The HPOP reservoir holds just under a quart of oil...if the reservoir
leaks down or the lines to the reservoir leak you can experiance
extended crank to start times (since the reservoir needs to be
"filled")....eventually the "leak" can be bad enough that the
minimum pressure cant be developed or maintained.

you wouldnt be the 1st ive heard of that lost the pressure
or developed the leak on the fly

heres some links on the service bulletin...INTERNATIONAL
has been using a NEWER/BETTER connector (ford hasnt picked up
on this updated 1 piece connector YET...unfortunately)

HPOP Connector Bracket TSB LINK
New One-Piece High Pressure Oil Pump Connector (Updated International Part)LINK

if youre bored, cant sleep or just plain curious you can read more
about your engine here in the infamous 6.0 bible

With the volumes of black smoke he was describing, I'm wondering if there was an EGR burp, or if it's getting junk information from one of the cam sensors and is trying to fire out of time.

I guess my thought is if there isn't enough to fire the injectors, where's the smoke coming from?

I'll be curious to see what the diagnostics kick back.

good points kleetus...

usually the egr causes some smoke but doesnt dramatically
stop the forward motion.

w/out knowing the codes we can only guess whats up w/ it.

to my knowledge theres been no cps failures <in mass> w/ the
6.0...so some of my diagnoses are nothing more than known patterns
based on some vague symptoms...at least until we know the codes.

its the cool think about the 6.0 @ this point...not to many unique
problems...just like the cps and the under valve cover harness burn
thru on the 7.3s...makes it CHEAP to diagnose and repair any more...
for the most part.

Throttle not getting a responses signal from the petal sound like. It's a Throttle by wire system.

***update***

The dealership got me my truck back right after lunch today  As it turned out it was the egr valve. What does EGR stand for and better yet what is its purpose?

exhaust gas recirculation

1st time ive hard of an egr valve "downing" a truck...

familarize yourself w/ these threads and if nothing else
you can probably avoid the dealer next time.

FWIW the egr can typically be unpluged (as a method of diagnoses)
You can still drive/run the truck w/ the EGR disconnected if there
are drivablity issues w/ it connected.

Woo Hoo! Score one for the home team!

Glad you're able to be back on the road without lots of aggravation.
