Is there any difference between the 08 F350 and F450 frames? The dealer tells me its heavier than the F350, so I asked specifically "not the chassis, just the frame", and he responded "yes".

Its not a flat commercial standard frame like in the F550, it looks like an F350 frame. Anybody know for sure, thicker frame rails, extra bracing, etc....

One difference, according to Ford literature, is the section modulus of the frame...the F350 DRW Chassis is 8.7 Cubic inches versus 10.1 Cubic inches and 17.2 Cubic inches (188.8 WB) on the F450 Chassis. The pickup versions have the same section modulus, 6.7 Cubic inches.

Thanks guys, given all the info from here Ive decided to go with an F550 chassis and a repo unit mounted to that. Its only been a year and Im already on my second truck!!!!
Hopefully, a full F550 cab and chassis will last a long time.
1st truck, $60,000
2nd truck, $53,000
3rd and hopefully final truck, $86,000
A truck that last more than 6 months towing, priceless!!!!!!!!

When I was deciding what truck to order the other day, I was able to compare the two. If you look at the front fender on the F450 you would see that the fender flares are much wider than the F350. You would then notice that Ford actually had to put small black bumper extenders to make up for the wider fender flares. Didn't believe it myself until I saw the 2 trucks side by side. There is a large noticable difference, whcih would lead one to assume the fron axle is wider on the F450 than the F350. My .02

Hey guys,
Did some more research on the subject. The F450 is a proprietory frame to the F450 and the F450 only. It utilizes a front frame section from a F550, hence the wider front track, close to 6"s more I think. The rear is a modified F350 frame designed to fit the standard pickup box but reinforced to be rated higher than the F350. Dana super 60 front end, Dana 110 rear end, pretty stout from what I can tell. So Im working on a deal for an 08 F450 XLT, if it all goes through the bank i will be here tommorow night.

Bigred I thought you were looking at a cab & chassis? In that case the 450 and 550 frames ARE identical. The 450 pickup frame is a hybrid.

Also, if you're going for the short wheelbase 550 cab & chassis (141"), know that there is no difference whatsoever to the 450 except for rear diff ratio. Save your money and get the 450.

Yeah, I was looking at a cab and chassis upfit w/ a wheel lift but it was going to be over $65,000. I already have a Minuteman HDH to go in a pickup and Im picking up an 08 F450 pickup style XLT 4x4 for $42,000. Much cheaper and the best option for now. I only do light duty towing so the F450 pickup should be overkill for my application, just how I like it. Better to under load than overload.
