What year and model are your truck and what are you referring to as an "airflow sensor"?

If your truck is the 7.3L Powerstroke and you are referring to the little sensor in the airbox, then it is an ambient air temperature sensor. It does not have to be in the air path, just close to the area of intake air. Mine is zip tied to the fender area.

its a 6.0L... in a 2005 E350 van... and it is the sensor in the airbox... and if I were to put it near the air filter, I would have to extend the wires.... would this be safe? Thanks for all the info

Sorry I have no real knowledge with the 6.0. Maybe someone else will chime in here.

If its on a 6.0L......you will throw a CEL.

And let me tell you, the 05/06 6.0L have a mighty picky MAF sensor. :(

I just spent the last 4 months working with AFE on there stage 2 intake set up redesigning it to work on 05/06 6.0L, without throwing a CEL. There is a fine line between it working and it throwing a CEL.... The slightest voltage drop and......

Good Luck..... -Jay;)
