Honestly Joe, I have never found one that I liked better than a regular paper filter, mostly cause I stopped buying expensive filters like that when the tacoma had all its trouble. But bigger is better I always say. You're pretty good at coming up with a way around bottlenecks, jump in on the wifes ride and tymar it, or something, and let us know what you come up with! As far as air into the engine, with a turbo, swirled or not just get the air to the turbo any clean way you can, and let the turbo do the rest. :drive

I cant figure out Why.. K&N takes such a Whip'n. I can kinda understand it on a dezel cuz of the (as compared to a Gasser) CFMs we use and need.. But I've used K&N filters on my Bikes, Boats, Dune-Buggies, Cars.... For Years & Years and Never seen any indication of Anything getting by their filtration.

I will say, they could do a bit better on their Seals, I've had to "build up" their Seal on a couple of "Drop-in" applications.. to feel better about it, but recently it seems they do better about that. The one I got for the Sport Trac actually fit tighter (when I snapped the cover back on), than the FOMOCO one did.

I had their FIPK open air one on my 7.3 before I went to the AIS and was completely satisfied with it.. I just got tired of the HOWLING when I'd spin up the turbo before, and when pulling a grade. (the turbo Whine sez more ? :sly;))

Not defending K&N or Flame'n anyone but I think folks maybe tend to Over Oil'm. Over Oiled, Not so good of a seal= Stuff gets by

:dunno

Marketing keeps all of these companies going. They have a big name and that is all most people look for. You and I learned what filters (oil and fuel) work and what don't (K&N). We all get educated every day, or at least we try.

something to keep in mind-

the stock 7.3 filter with the flat element leaves much to be desired. if you are not careful, you can pinch the filter and you get a gap that unfiltered air will sneak through. that is the stock one BIG_JOE means.

the 6.0 filter that DeveBen refers to is the ford AIS filter. that is a GOOD, stock, oem drop in filter. many of us 7.3 guys put those in our trucks with the fender cut out and fender sleeve. the element is HUGE and made by donaldson. :thumbs

point is, stock is not stock, and you have to take into account the year/engine.

barring that, the $50 DIY tymar filter is decent. look in the wiki for details.

Joe, to give a little more detail on the k&n problem I had, the mass air flow sensor element inside the opening would get a build up of cotton/oil/dirt on it, to the point that it would stop sensing the air rushing by it, and turn on my ses light. To me it looked like I never would have known, had it not been for the sensor, because everything behind it was still clean. Kinda made me nervous, thats all.:watchout

I didn't realize that it mattered whether it is a 7.3, 6.0, 6.4, etc... on Cold air vs more air..

I have a 2001 Ford F250 4X4 w/7.3L PwrStroke. I have added a whicked wheel, and I have made my own AIS type Air box with my factory air box. Cut a hole like the AIS and made my own Funnel to the Wheel well, However I am using a K&N, which I guess is a big mistake....

Has anyone used or know anything about the TRUE FLOW air filters? I was told they are made a lot like the Donaldson AIS Filters are made....

Thanks to everyone for the Education!!!
