I was wondering if anyone new what the best type of air flow is best for your turbo?
I see additions that make the air swirl, supposed to increase performance, milage, fuel burn, etc...
Than you also see products like the Honey Comb insert that makes the air flow straight into the turbo. The creator of this unit says it is like a lawnmower cutting blades of grass and gets better use of the air.... WHAT DOES THAT MEAN???

More Air vs... COLD Air, which is more important?

Too many products out there for the people that just like to tinker....

MORE air is more important. Diesels do not benefit much from cold air, because the fuel makes the power and not the air/fuel ratio. There is no lean or rich (with in reason) in a diesel. Only power, more power and most power = fuel, more fuel, most fuel. I have not heard of any studies on the air flow pattern to the turbo charger. What ever makes your skirt blow up. I am still running the STOCK AIR FILTER. There is no better, until you get to 500hp and you need more air. DO NOT GET K&N AIR FILTERS! They are junk. Many here, and at other forums, say this and I have seen the results.

My opinion will differ a bit from Dave's on this one (;)), but..

IMO, it's all about >Enough< air. The stock air intake systems on these trucks leave a good bit to be desired, air intake snorkle size (alowable CFM), flow design and filtration.

Honk'n BIG is not nessasarily better. But Big-ger, more effecient is, unless yer guna Race, Pull Sleds or Stumps. Open Air or Air Box type (?), yer choice.

From Stock..I'v had both.. ended up with the AIS (Ford part) with a Big-ger intake snorkle and an additional inlet (from the D-side fender) that both draw cooler, outside air through a much big-ger filter.. than the panel type.

Swirly things ? it's ALL.. a matter of personal choice when it comes to all these "Swirly" things, but I happened to be in on the Beta testing on one of the (as you called them) "Honeycomb" things. I have two, one as the air flow exits the air box, one on the Turbo inlet. (TAGS, or Turbo Air Guides, by brand name)

During the Beta testing I drove with them, and without, empty and towing, through all types of terrain... Coast to Coast. For me ? they work. Turbo responce, EGTs and overall SOTP perfomance. NOT Wizbang.. just better.

Ambeint (cooler/cold) outside air ? In Theory..Cool(er)(more dense) air can be more commpressed than warm(er) air, so I go with my Intake air coming from as cool a source as possible.

Jus my chioces & opinion

Now we are talking the differences between Big Joe's 7.3 engine and mine a 6.0 engine. They are different, so take that into your consideration. No offense taken, Big Joe :).

K&N's are locally knows as "squirrel traps" because that's about the smallest particle they stop...

I too have seen the results of a k&n first hand, Had one in my tacoma that let so much dirt by it that it would foul the mass airflow sensor! You probably get more air in the motor, but at what cost.

anyway, back to the question at hand...
when I had my turbo & stuff off last week doing pedestal seals, I looked inside the quadrapus and thought, "...if you polished that, you would get less turbulent airflow..."

then I thought, "...yeah f*** it; It's under pressure anyway..."

Honestly Joe, I have never found one that I liked better than a regular paper filter, mostly cause I stopped buying expensive filters like that when the tacoma had all its trouble. But bigger is better I always say. You're pretty good at coming up with a way around bottlenecks, jump in on the wifes ride and tymar it, or something, and let us know what you come up with! As far as air into the engine, with a turbo, swirled or not just get the air to the turbo any clean way you can, and let the turbo do the rest. :drive
