I am new to diesels. I have a 2004 F250 super duty. When I change my air filter do I need to place oil on the filter. I am wondering this because of some articles I have seen on diesel filters. Also, getting the filter out and new one in seems like a pain in the butt. Is there something I may be doing wrong. I know that it is important to get it in properly and the cover put back on. Any info will help. THanks!!!

You don't oil a stock element. The easiest way to swap the filter is to pinch off and remove overflow hose to overflow tank, loosen clamps and pull the whole mess out. It just pops in, so to speak. Grab from the top and remove whole housing, replace filter, and pop back in. One of the other users can probably link you to the photos.

If you can change the air filter without bleeding, you are doing GOOD!! It is a big hassle to get it out and in again.

you should lube the gasket (for a better seal) on the 6.0L OE air filter...
becareful w/ that gasket though...its foam/rubber and can tear...dont
try to SLIDE the filter it *you can very easily tear or rip the foam gasket*

cheapest OE replacement air filters ive found are 42 bucks from fleetfilter.com
i buy my "toilet paper" (by pass) trans filters from 'em too (for about 8 bucks
each).

the link below provides a method for removal / replacement of the stock
filter...it may seem excessive...but i find i can remove and replace using
this menthod (see link) faster than screwing around trying to slide the
thing in.

FDDTS - 6.0L Power Stroke Air Filter Removal

** I no longer buy my fuel filters or oil filters from them though...the fuel
and oil filters dont follow OE spec in my opinion...infact they are different
SIZE (height) and have damaged some fuel filter caps...fleetfilter.com
is a great bunch of guys...and im not telling you anything i havent told
them or anything they dont know.

*** check your lower radiator hose....visually and by feel...make sure
its not cut or rubbed by steering control arm...replacement hose is
30 bucks (from o'riley auto parts)...xerex G-05 coolant is 10 bucks
per gallon (available at autozone)

if all you do is change the lower hose youll need 3 gallons of coolant
and a gallon of distilled water (unless you re-cycle the old coolant).

Question for you guys: I've heard that the OEM air filter flows just as good as an aftermarket one or even better. Till you get into higher Hp?? Now this dosen't sound right to me. Can anyone tell me if this is a fact or bull. Thanks guys!

fact ! truth of the matter is that no one has EVER proven that
the donaldson mfg'd OE filter was any kinda CHOKE point on our
trucks.

in fact its one of the BETTER FILTERS...its designed to hold up to
THREE POUNDS of crud and it filters down to as small as 1 micron
(try and find the filtering "micron" level of a K&N or high flow type
filter)

interestingly enough even k&n says their filters FILTER better as
it gets DIRTY (the dirt helps BLOCK more dirt...) so from that i must
as:

if it filters better when dirty is it still flowing as much as they
claim (clean vs. dirty) ? wheres the INITIAL dirt go until the filter
starts TRAPPING MORE dirt ?

its a SIMPLE fact...a higher flowing filter MUST (by nature) allow
more dirt to flow thru it TOO ! if my turbo charger VANES werent
the 1st thing in line after the filter i might not be as worried about
a little extra DIRT (and WEAR) !

i always hear how hard the stock filter is to get in and out...
if you loosen the 1st TWO worm clamps after the filter & disconnect the
mass air flow sensor the air filter & "box" come out w/out as much
as a skinned knuckle one ! (i find that its not even necessary
to disconnect the degauss tank line Or the rear most clamp on
the air filter).

heres a good set of instructions on how to remove the OE filter EASILY ->
FDDTS - 6.0L Power Stroke Air Filter Removal

everyone says they change to the K&N's cause theyre easier...but
the fact of the matter is they need plenty of cleaning and re-oiling
TOO...and they arent CHEAP ('specially when you consider
the "start up" cost).

again the factory replacement DONALDSON filter is available for 42 bucks
from fleetfilter.com...i just changed mine out yesterday...it i gave up
ZERO blood in doing the swap !

heres some more about filters & the 6.0L
