AFE intake

I did some looking into the AFE Box that I have installed on my truck and I followed the box down to where the air intake is. I noticed that there is no room for the box to take in air. It is blocked by the fiberglass that the grill mounts on. I cut the fiberglass down to expose the intake side of the AFE Box so that I could actually get some cold air intake. You guys might investigate this as well.

If you open your hood there is a rubber flap that has the serpintine belt layout sticker on it. It should run across the whole front side of your truck. Lift the corner up on the drivers side where the AFE Box air intake is. On my 05, there is a fiber glass baracade! No room for air. I cut out the fiberglass in the circumfrence of the AFE intake. I have noticed a large difference. I am not sure what the design is on the other year model trucks, but the 05 is this way.

I had the same experience. It is my understanding that occasional "turbo fart" at a quick release deceleration is normal, but when it happens at acceleration,it may be turbo related as mine was. Sticky intermittent v.g.t.. It was not my aftermarket intake. With my stock intake on I felt that it just muffled the problem better.

My truck makes the whine when you are on the accelerator.

What do you mean by sticky intermittent v.g.t?

If anyone could steer me in the right direction i would like to correct this problem with my truck.

What he means is the controls that operate the vanes in the turbo... The unison ring along with the vanes sometimes have a tendency to stick, and it causes some weird results. This could be anything from low boost, over boost, inconsistent boost, and just plain lousy performance. The fix is usually just cleaning up the ring and vanes once you take the turbo apart. International sells a kit with all the stuff you need, I think it's like $50. If you do some digging on here, I think Bush posted a procedure for it with pictures. It's not overly tough, just a bit time consuming. Best thing to do is run it pretty hard from time to time, and keep it exercised and clean. Rust and inactivity are not your friends!

I meant that the turbo occasionally would quit doing it's thing. After hard acceleration it would hang up for awhile, like a huge long lag, then come back. Because of all the moving parts in it and the predisposition for getting 'coked' up. I don't know if this was a problem just for the 03' or not. Good Luck!

A way better explanation Kleetus, thank you. Do you guys think CCV Mod is a good idea to protect my new(reconditioned)turbo? Any downside? And I do occasionally drive it like I stole it, now that I have studs!

No... CCV isn't going to help that, that is only on the intake side. Unfortunately the trouble is on the exhaust side. Just keeping it moving is the best bet. These engines were designed to run, and run hard under load. Most of what we do with them isn't good for them.

As a Contractor, running hard under load is what I do a lot of. All the problems I had came before my aftermarket binge of mods, bone stock. After new heads and studs, I figured what the heck. I should have waited till 100k but just couldn't help myself. After one point being very close to shopping for a Dodge, I now love this truck! But it has cost quite a bit to get this satisfaction. My Wife is awesome for understanding my other love.
