but not near 800hp



i would surmize said teacher is just a bit optimistic.
maybe 800hp ONCE for a short time but doubtfull any longevity

I seem to recall that "Marine HP" is rated different than regular HP. I forget just how the conversion goes but someone can probably find it. The 800hp rating is not comparing apples to apples..

Really...i thought everyone just rated HP at the crank...anything else
would provide a worthless comparison.

manufactures spec hp @ the crank...the general public wants to know
the hp at the wheels...

they are basically the same as crankshaft for inboards,
outdrives and outboards are PROPshaft ratings, which do not apply to large diesel set ups, its all bhp at the flywheel

All Cat Marine engines shipped on or after January 1, 2000 have ratings which meet IMO standards for nitrogen oxide emission limits in Regulation 13 of Annex VI of Marpol 73/78"
