Has anyone driven both? I'm in the market to sell my 99 7.3L and was considering switching fuels. I was looking at some nice early 2000's gas 5.4 and v10 and the prices were reasonable. how do things like fuel economy, ride, power, pulling power, longetivity, etc compare to the 7.3?

Imressions? insights? comparisons?

It will be used mostly for DD with occasionally filling up the bed with junk.

Well mpg will probably just a little bit better if not the same as the 7.3. The 7.3 will last longer just because its a diesel. Gas motors dont normally last as long. 7.3's are just built to last. My bor has a 5.4 in his 98 f150 and he likes it. Gets about the same mpg as my 7.3. I heard good things on the v10 but it sucks gas. I heard some of the 5.4's, not sure if it was the early or later ones had probs with the sparkplugs breaking off in the heads.

My gf has a 2000 F250 with the 5.4 and its got over 200k. The gas motors last a long time but those 7.3's just last forever and get good mpg for what size they are and what size the truck is. Sucks diesel keeps goin up.

My dad has an excursion V10 and my uncle has a F350 V10. You need a dedicated gas station to pull behind it. And the passing power....doesn't really feel like that "kick" you feel with a 7.3. It revs up high and feels like its barely pulling. I couldn't imagine getting away from a 7.3...or anything diesel. For a dd, I would suggest to get the v8.

If I were to do anything like that, I'd have to tell you to get the new 6.2 gasser..
the 5.4 is a woorkhorse engine, that's for sure, but it's underpowered when dealing with a 9,200 lb trailer full or horses or the like..

the V10 has the cajones, but it's a fuel HOG. I've never spoken to a V10 owner who has achieved more than about 12mpg..

I had a '99' 5.4l gas F250. Gas consumption was 16 empty, 12 - 13 towing.
found the 5.4 at the time, to be a dog for towing my 26' TT.

I traded it for a 2000 PSD - WOW!!! towing performance is vastly improved over the gas version. Also the PSD gets 16 mpg towing, 21.5 mpg solo.

1999 5.4l had 4.10 axle ratio (4 x 4). 2000 PSD has 3.73 rear axle ratio (2wd). I opted for the 2wd as I don't go off roading pulling the TT.

Hopes this helps,

If yer not hauling much, the gasser would be probably be better since gas is cheaper than diesel right now and probably wont change anytime soon. Those days are over. BUT, I would rather have the 7.3 IMO. More than enough truck that will outlast any gasser. Sucks diesel is more but got to pay to play.
