Gotta love that CPS.................I have replaced at least three(3) of them on the side of the road.

HEY HEY HEY LISTEN TO ME

HEY HEY HEY LISTEN TO ME! ! ! ! ! Got 3 trucks total and mine has had the most problems so here it goes.

I would follow everythhing 94F450SD said... EXCEPT the removal of the belt. That is not needed but can be done if you want. 1st thing, make sure you are CAREFUL in trying to remove the bolt, if you round it off then you've got bigger problems.

Go to http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=FORD+CPS&category0= <-- that is ebay and that is the part you need. You can usually find it for 40-50 bones online, 70-90 at International or have the ford guy say whoa, let me look that up cuz its expensive.... 3 min later, o that'll run ya about 198 bucks plus tax... F#$% that...

There is a chance (since your tach moved) that it is NOT the CPS, but with the rate that these things fail, it can be considered routine maintainence lol. It took me <10 min to do it for the first time and I think I could re-do it in about 3 now... so go get em :thumbs

Remember that since the CPS causes the truck to "defuel" that extended cranks are usually in order. No more then 20 seconds a crank, give 1 or 2 minutes between cranks. You may need a battery charger, I did. The reason for this is because you can/will burn up your starter and that is a whole 'nother can o worms...

IF this doesn't work, try removing your chip (if possible) and then crank it. I'm not familiar with your program so I can't offer you advice there. Hope this helps...

Here is a picture of the CPS location and a new plug. The picture was taken from underneat the truck and its just to the passenger side of the front of the engine. I know this will help!

Also, there has been long/many debates about blue vs black CPS. Since the blue (international) CPS is for a slightly different motor it will work but it retards the timing and unless you've got specific mods, will not be the best for your truck. Generally speaking, the black (FORD) CPS is what you should use but hey, if your in a pinch I'd take either!

Hey guys I just joined on the board here. Looks like a great site already. I have been having a similar problem. I have had the CPS changed once before from a friend of mine that is a diesel specialist at a Ford dealer. My girlfriend was driving it at the time and it would die and she would have to wait a while and then it would start and go again. I am having a similar problem again but do not know if same problem. Vehicle will die but I can restart immediately. Do you guys think the same thing is going on? It is 2000 7.3diesel with 127000 miles on it. Thanks in advance.

I had similar problems on 2000 PSD. Have you tried to have codes read? Code for ICP sensor showed up and replaced sensor. Seems to have cured the problem.
