I have a early 2006 with 27000 on it and everything is fine. I would say put a sat of gages on it the first thing if you are going to be towing with it.
Then a 4 in Turbo back exhaust. Try to find a 05 06 or 07 with low miles. My truck pulls my fifth wheel so easy. Good luck on finding what you are looking for.

55k on mine, one egr (replaced) under the 3/36 warranty and ive never
had any more engine issues.

I just hauled the family 500miles friday and saturday not a problem, and
my confidence in the truck is 100% (go anywhere any time...and i dont
haul a single tool w/ me)

expect that youll need to replace ball joints (the factory units are
crap & are not grease-able) and the OE rancho "looking" shocks wont
last long (replace w/ bilsteins / lifetime warranty)...youll wonder why
you didnt replace 'em earlier !

other than that the truck has been nothing more than basic maint.,
fill ups & turning the key !

I've got an '05 with 63K miles on it, bought it a year ago with 41K on, and stock. I've done all the upgrades to it (lift, banks IC, tuner, exhaust, etc..) and haven't had a single problem with it.

A good friend bought a used '05 with 28k on it 6 months ago, and already blew an egr cooler, alternator f***ed up and started an engine fire, and needed a new valve body in his tranny. Apparently the previous owner had "chipped" the truck without guages and caused alot of damage to it. But Ford did pay for ALL of the repairs under the warranty except for alternator and fire with was at 38K, but after some long "discussion" they went ahead and paid for all of those repairs as well ($1800 worth)

These trucks are so mass produced, most of them won't give you problems as long as they are well maintained and cared for, but as with ANY vehicle there are going to be the "lemons" out there.

Knick makes some good points...like ANYTHING...abuse it & ignore
any signs of basic maint. and youre asking for trouble ! mess w/ the
"daily driver" stuff and expect to POTENTIALLY reduce the reliablity too,
its a trade off typically...

learn how to perform even the most basic maint. then youll KNOW
when something needs MORE attn. (rather than wait for it to fail).

I love my truck. It's an 06 with over 42k on it. I bought it new and have done all the regular maintenance. I had a switchable quad box on it and sold it to go to a tow box. I'm much happier with this option. The tranny knows how much power is always there and I can hook onto my 30' DO GN with two Jeeps and haul all day with no issues! I absolutely love this truck and for family heritage and just pure pride in the brand will never own any other brand of truck!
