Why does the 6.0 get worse gas mileage than the 7.3? My Dad just got a '06 6.0 and he is getting about 12/14 from his calculations and I get 15/21 in my 7.3? He has the SCMT and that is not changing it any. He got about the same numbers has me when he had his 7.3, both of us have/had the SCMT in the 7.3 as well.

Hmmmm don't know that I'd broad brush all 6.0's like that. I have a brand new 2005 6.0 Excursion, Eddie Bauer, 4x4 that I would not consider broken in yet and it recently delivered 17.7 mpg @ 80 mph on the return leg from Northern Va to Miami. I got 15.4 on the way up. I still only have 4k miles on it. My 6.0 seems to be running better and better as it settles in. (knock on my wooden head):D

Driving habits have a lot to do with it...
break in also....
but mostly it's a smaller displacement engine with a LOT more emission crap on it and asked to move the same weight or more....

It is was it is...
and I RARELY check the mpg on my 8000 pound Excursion

although the overhead around town typically says about 17 mpg...

Yea, his overhead console reads 14-15 most of the time. Don't think it is driving habits though. I don't know if it is all 6.0s but my uncle has an '05 and gets the same results.

coming back from Vegas last weekend averaged 17.9 around 75mph average.

I cant complain, but the wife and kids sure do, 'cause dad doesnt have to stop for gas as often. (just under half a tank left after 400 miles).
around town it gets around 14, towing around 10-11 (12k)

Once you've uploaded a SCMT program to the truck the overhead display for mileage is no longer accurate or invalid, the only way to do it properly is by hand calculations:sweet

As the miles get put the mpgs will get better and better but as mentioned it depends on how heavy the foot is,time idling, stop and go,etc.

I'd recommend upgrading the exhuast system or at least install the BTM but with Ford being so finicky about anything warranty that may be a no-go.

I am getting around 12 - 12.5 around town with alot of stop and go driving. On Highway (not towing) I am getting around 16 - 17 mpg. I have the tow-boss package with the 4.30 gears, thats why my mpg's are a little low. but it's better that my 2004 5.4 F-250 was getting

she seems to like to turn at rpms aproaching 3k to be the smoothest and most efficient if your not using cruise she will easily reach 3500 rpm and still feel like she wants more

I am getting the the same if not some what better mileage with my 04 6.0 dually (4.10 axle) than what I did with my 02 7.3 SRW. I deffinetly get better mileage with the 6.0 when its loaded and going up the mountains. When the tires wear out I will replace them with something slightly taller, I really don't need the benefits of the 4.10 gears at this time.
