Typically the TDI's stay in the 40's all the time so 50+ isn't too surprising.

better hurry. There was no 2006 Passat TDI and there wont be a 2007 TDI of any kind other than the Toureg. They dont fit the new ULSD requirements and VW simply pulled the TDI from the US. Thank the a**hole tree-huggers for that one. They MIGHT bring it back in a couple of years but given diesels are not hot cars in our market I wont be surprised to hear them say it isnt worth their time.

See my sig. I have averaged 52 on one tank of diesel. This is in a manual trans golf, not a passat. I have a hard time believing a passat (automatic only, much bigger, heavier car, larger engine) could be in the 50 MPG range, but it is possible...

tdi 's DO get great mileage

i have a heavy foot and consistently get 45mpg at 80mph+. this was with my 04 PD and 06 PD. 85 golf, 1.6NA (no turbo) would easily get 40mpg around town.

new tdi's are going for PREMIUM.

look for late model A3 platform. that would be 96-98 years. why? they look good and have the 1.9l ALH motor which you can mod the crap out of them. most people who don;t know much about tdi;s are gobbling up all the late model cars. ignoring the earlier ones which are great little cars.

VW is Audi and Porsche. Audi & VW both have diesels over there, but just not here, yet. It all comes down to emmisions.
