My truck won't go into 4x4 when it's cold outside. I can drive fast, slow or be stopped and it won't go in. But if I shut the truck off and fire it back up it will go in. It's a dash switch 4x4

if you flip the gear selector into neutral, then dial up low range, what does it do?

I tried it this morning as I left the driveway and it went on just fine. Seems to me it just wont go in after I start moving on the highway and for some time after I stop too.

Yes I still have the auto hubs. But would the vac leak not show up all the time? This only happens in the cold after I get on the highway

The vacuum hubs are not a maintenance free item. Pull em off, clean and regrease with a light oil. Replace the orings and check the vacuum lines going to the hubs.

A little care and they will work fine.

Even if there is no vacuum, I believe that the dash light will change.

So... Is the dash light changing and the hubs not engaging, or does the dash light do nothing? These are very different.

There is no light on the dash at all. When the light comes on it has 4x4.
