Has anyone measured the downpipe diameter? On my 2006 with manual transmission it has a 3" downpipe. It looks to be mandrel bent with no sharp curves, and has plenty of room for a larger pipe if needed. From the downpipe back, it is 3.5 inches.

stock
the turbine outlet is 3.5 " pipe is 3.5"
to the kitty
biggest restriction is the factory muffler its a clogger, followed by the kitty soot trap screens

best increase for low bucks is loose the muffler
and if your area allows the kitty should see the vet for an extended stay
if not you will still see a big diference in egts just loosing the factory muffler

Ditto on my auto equipped '06. 3" to the cat, 3.5" from there on back.

Maxtor,

All the 6.0's that I have seen including a new 2007 have a 3.0 down pipe and a 3.5 inch system size after the cat. Systems like the MBRP have a 3.5 inch down pipe and a 4.0 system or 5.0 systems size.

2006 have 3" down pipe.

Ford has seen it necessary to install a 3 inch down pipe on the newer 6.0 engines instead of the 3.5 inch down pipe that the earlier 6.0 engines have.
Well, here is the question of the year.
Since Ford has had some problems with the early 6.0 engines, I wonder if they think that the size of the down pipe in some way contributed to problems.
I do not see an advantage for a smaller down pipe, unless they installed a smaller turbo at the same time. Anyone know a Ford Engineer?

I wonder if it has to do with turbulence in the downpipe from the turbo, if that would have any effect on the output blades of the turbo? I know in hydraulics if you don't match your port to the next piece in the system, bad things happen. This is the same thing other than hotter and a heck of a lot less viscous...

Could be....

When I talked with a Banks representative, he told me that the reason that Banks does not sell a down pipe for the manual trans 6.0 is that they found that their down pipe did not flow any better than Fords.
My thoughts are that maybe Banks found that there were not that many manual trans 6.0's for them to make a special down pipe for so few trucks.
This would make since, since Banks does make a 3.5 inch down pipe for the new automatic 6.0's that came stock with 3 inch down pipes.

Since the output of the turbo is 3.5 inches, maybe Ford found that they needed some back pressure off the turbo. It would be interesting to know the truth.
