Im new to the diesel scene and the site. I have a 1997 F350 dually diesel. Just was wondering if I should be able to spin the tires on a dirt road. Once ithits second you really feel it comming on but in first it doesnt really seem able to get out of its own way. I have never drivin one before to be able to tell if its normal or not. It only has 153000 miles on it and no dash lights on or any thing, Thanks for the help. Jarrod.

Sounds like your's is running like mine. I'm guessing 3.55 rear gear? Between turbo lag and the short gear, It won't be a rocket ship out of the hole. You may look into power adders, but make sure the mechanical stuff is in top shape, before asking the PCM to pour more fuel in.

Jarrod,

Russ is pretty much right on, until that turbo spools up and begins building boost you wont have alot of umphh. There are several things you can do to help that out if that is your desire. Theres a couple of guys around here that can fry all 4 tires in first gear :D

btw..... welcome to SDD.:sweet.

I have a 97 dually and im able to spin the tires on a dirt road, I have no chip, all I have is intake and exhaust.. All the duallies came with 4.10 gears that Im aware of, the turbo does have an effect on the motor though, a good chip will cure all your problems though... Diesels leave the factory detuned to pass the EPA standards so it needs to be tuned by a programmer so you can have the power level brought back up

I Have a 97 7.3 F 350. I put in a 6 pos.chip . Great h.p. addition. Got on ebay. I think you can get ahold of them at www.CMPchips.com. It looks like a bully dog set up. First pos stock, 2nd pos fast idle, 3 more pos up to 140 hp. Mine works great & a great price.

Two trains of thought here, Tuners are reliable and easy power adders. Most of them are plug and play and in 10 minutes you have your new power level, most of them read the basic DTC codes and for the most part they are "safe" to play with, meaning you wont be able to overfuel the engine with a tuner since they use pretty generic tuning parameters. Thats the upside of a tuner, downside is you cant flip between programs on the fly, they dont deliver the rated HP most times, dollars per gained HP is not the best bang for the buck (most tuners are in the $400.00 range) and you can be in a custom burned 4 position chip from one of the reputable tuners for about the same money. Chips are more difficult to install. SCMT-1705 is a very popular choice for the 94-97 crowd.
