Hey guys and gals out there in Diesel land, I could use some help here, My tranny packed it in today and left me on the side of the road...now before I get to far ahead here, let me drop some info on this topic...

this has happened before in the past, first it was my stock tranny that failed, so I went to the fellows over at North American Diesel Power and they hooked me up with one of their heavy hauler tranny's...at first it seemed to be the fix, great shifting, felt strong, 6 months later and 46km under there 25,000km warranty it packed it in...they fixed me up, and I was off once again, only got 4 months out of it this time, again they warranted it and gave me a whole new tranny...and now after 10 months, 3 weeks and 2 days, (give or take) it has left me waiting for a tow truck...So now I ask the world... who makes a good auto tranny that will handle the extra power (over 500hp), and last longer than a year?

...From one Diesel drinker to another...thanks.

I was thinking about maybe dropping in a 6 speed manual transmission and doing away with the automatic transmission all together... has anyone ever done this, or would it be cheaper just to buy a new truck with a 6 speed manual in it...

I understand there would be quite a bit of work to do it...but I feel my driving style :burnit does not go well with automatic transmissions and would need something different...

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated Thanks!

A manual is a good transmission, but if you are wanting to race, or accelerate fast from a stop, then a manual is not for you. What it will do is
1. give better fuel mileage
2. more control going up or down grades
3. less things to go wrong.

Saying that, probably purchasing another truck that has a manual in it would be much less expensive and time consuming.
If you lived in San Francisco, and needed to take off up hill with a heavy load, it would not be user friendly to the clutch. Also I would not like to be in Los Angeles stop and go traffic pulling our 5th wheel either. Since we do not live in San Francisco, and we stay far away from Los Angeles, we love our manual.
Another advantage, Wife does not drive stick shift, so the PSD is all mine..:D

You could also look at an 8 speed, or one of the other commercially available trannys that bolt up to the VT365, it would give you a lot of other options and I'm certain much heavier clutches and overall torque ratings. Might be a bit heavier, but who's really counting pounds these days?

Several places offer what are called Stage I, Stage II and Stage III trannys. Suncoast, ATS etc etc..... Be prepared to dump about $5K on one that will hold 500 horse though.

You need to consider what Maxtor mentioned. What are your expectations from the tranny? Pulling a trailer? Pulling a seld? Mash the go pedal and hang onto your hat?

BTS does build a stout automatic, but I would want a guarantee that was beyond two years. Two years comes very quick. I would feel better with a 10 year guarantee.
Rebuilding or replacing automatic transmissions is very expensive, that is one of the reasons we ordered our truck with a manual.
